I did a bit more research after I asked that question and found an answer that I'm "ok with"I ran 2 antennaes on a splitter wired up backwards. It worked...ish. I added amplified rabbit ears to my roof mounted antenna, and didn't really notice an improvement.
I didn't do it with 2 good antennaes though, so I have no idea how effective it really is.
I suppose there's probably an issue with decibel levels and the ability of the splitter to carry 2 full signals.
You would likely need to amplify after you combine.
The antenna have to be spaced a specific distance apart vertically and at least 1 wave-length horizontally if they are on the same vertical plane. The co-ax from each antenna to the "combiner" (backward splitter) has to be the same length. You may still get ghosting if the 2nd antenna picks up signal from the direction of the first one.
I'm going to try it. I ordered 1 winegard antenna off amazon the other day, supposed to be here next week. I plan to try an attic install first. I think with a good gain antenna and an amp I should be able to pull in Indy stations with no problem. If that works out well then I'll try adding on the Louiseville stations.
My wife has been bugging me to get real TV for once; I'm finally going to try to do it. I just don't know enough about this old-fashioned "over the air" TV.
