Alleged robbery killed in shooting near downtown - 13 WTHR

Indianapolis - A man was shot and killed as he reportedly tried to rob an apartment on the near north side Sunday afternoon.
Metro police officers responded to a report of a person shot at an apartment building at 1503 N. Pennsylvania Avenue around 4 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived, they found an unidentified male lying in the third floor hallway with multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.
The 24-year-old shooter told police he and his girlfriend were helping another friend move into an apartment when they were approached by the shooting victim, who was asking for change for a five dollar bill. One of the men said they had change in the apartment.
As they walked into the building, the shooting victim pulled out a gun and ordered everyone into the back room. The shooter said he feared for their lives, so while walking to the back area of the apartment, he pulled out a gun he was carrying, turned and fired at the would be robber. It is unknown if the shooting victim fired any shots.
Police say the shooter had a permit to carry a handgun. He and the two other victims of the apparent attempted robbery were taken in for interviews and to give statements to police. No arrests have been made at this time.
"It appears, based on preliminary information, to have been a case of self-defense," IMPD Sgt. Matt Mount wrote in a release.
The would-be robber has not yet been identified, but police say he was wearing an ankle bracelet consistent with those issued for home detention.

Looks like clear cut self-defense for the good guy.

Sorry for the shooter or his friends if they have later mental issues with the shoot.

    As for the robber.

if deemed SD, i believe IC says he cannot be held in any legal jeopardy what-so-ever. i wonder if case law has determined this to mean civil litigation as well?

A positive story from the Star with a legally armed citizen defending himself against an armed robbery. All signs point to a good shoot.

A man apparently trying to rob some Near-Northside residents was killed Sunday when one of the would-be victims pulled a gun and shot the assailant, authorities said.
The deceased man was wearing what police described as a home-detention ankle bracelet.

The shooting appeared to be self-defense, but investigators still were interviewing witnesses and evaluating evidence, Sgt. Matthew Mount, spokesman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, said in a written release.
The incident was reported to police at 6:11 p.m. inside the Rotherwood Apartments, 1503 N. Pennsylvania St., Mount said. The man appeared to have suffered four gunshot wounds to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene, on the apartment building's third floor.
The shots apparently were fired by a man who told police that he had gone to the building to help a friend move into an apartment. That man told police that another man approached him, asked for change for a $5 bill, then pulled a gun on the group and ordered them into a back room of the third-floor apartment.
The shooter said he pulled his gun and fired at the other armed man. All of the people involved in the shooting were on hand when the first police arrived and were questioned.
The man who fired the fatal shots had a permit to carry the handgun he fired, Mount said in the written statement. No one was immediately arrested or detained.
The name of the dead man was not immediately released.

Good job to the guy for taking immediate and decisive action. Nice to see the Indy Star referred to the bad guy as "the assailant" instead of "victim", as is so often the case.

Lets keep him in our prayers. Shooter and shot.

Why would you pray for the one that was shot? He was in the act of committing a robbery while armed with a handgun, and he was shot as a result. He chose to commit that act, and he had to face the consequences. I'm sure not going to give him or his family any consideration, and I'm not going to lose any sleep over a dead mope.

    Frank..

    Understand your sentiment...

    Also understand evansaurusrex's sentiment.

But praying for a person even 1 second after they're dead is, unfortunately, worthless.

"To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord"...and his judgement.
