The unanswered question is does your dad still have his hunting guns? My answers here would be different from my answers for my own personal use. If he is already stocked up on hunting guns and is comfortable with the AK, by all means keep him with the AK. Depending on his temperament a good .22 rifle would be a good all around hunting and SHTF gun considering that if he can exercise patience and good tactics, skillful use of that .22 could make him the proud new owner of all manner of other weapons. Since he isn't comfortable with handguns, that question is pretty well answered up front. If he is completely empty handed of guns, I would go with the .22. If that 'one gun only' question was more of a hypothetical and he is already outfitted for hunting, go with the AK. It should be less demanding of care and attention and he is already comfortable with it.

I'm not sure. I think the only thing he has now is a 700 in 22-250

    Shotgun

    Can reload with rocks

Can stun any food until I stab it

You mean so you don't find yourself in this situation?

Great question! The more I think about it the more questions I have.

For example, am I in an urban environment or rural? Is this a SHTF scenario or TEOTWAWKI? Am I hunkering down at home or bugging out? Am I alone or with a group? What other resources are at my disposal? Am I in Southern Indiana, Texas, Alaska, etc.?

Making the assumptions that I am at home with my family and this is not a winter storm scenario that has power out for weeks, but TEOTWAWKI, and I have the preps I now have on-hand with the only exception being I only have one gun, I would choose my mossy 500 12 ga.

I say this because I would not feel comfortable relying on my 10/22 to defend my family. Since I am at home I don't have to worry about carrying a lot of ammo with me. I also don't have to worry about long range shots as I am in a wooded hilly area and 60 yards is the longest shot possible. I can trap small game and also fish to put meat on the table. Of course, the 12 ga. with the right load will take any type of game in this area, but it would be loud. Both a .22LR or a 12 ga. would be normal for anyone around here to have, whereas an AK or AR could result in unwanted attention if I had to venture out off my property, or the military showed up to confiscate any evil "automatic weapons".

This being said, if it was an urban SHTF scenario, I would go with a .357 magnum because I could conceal it much better. If it was a SHTF event like those in NY/NJ have and are still experiencing, you're not going to get by with walking down the street with an AK or a 12 ga.

Good question because it makes me think through a lot of possible scenarios.

I'd go with the 10/22... so many replacement parts out there. Not to mention how easy it is to fix and swap in and out barrels, stocks and optics to fit just about any role, including quiet hunting.

Get a suppressor and you can hunt in silence to avoid unwanted attention. Won't need as much defense capability if no one knows you exist.

AK....with one provision...that I can load my own if needed. A 100 gr. Gas_check for small game and 150gr. for bigger game( at closer range).
12ga is too much lead and powder for SHTF reloading.
.22 is ok for small game or close range defense....not much else.
.223 is my choice for bugging out, with a .22auxiliary chamber for small game. Not a good round for
deer or hogs. Plenty for punks or a pack of wild dogs.

    North Dakota soon...
Let them take the turd shot guns and I will pick them off at distance and take there stuff. They wont even here the shot before they die. In a SHTF senario of coarse!

 Do people realize the Feds watch this stuff? Why do people feel the need to talk about how they can kill other people so easily? Especially on the Internet?

An all around firearm? I'd take a .22. It'll do the job for hunting and protection. Ammo for practice is cheap. If I get in a big ol' fire-fight like many here seem to fantasize about, well ****. I was in the wrong place in the wrong time and should've had better situational awareness. Game over. That's that.

Agree with all the 10/22'ers....when SHTF, the new "currency" will be ammo, 22 LR's and 9mm's

3in 12 gauge shotgun. Even better with screw in chokes or easy change barrels. There is not much any thing you couldnt do with the right shell. Smallist birdshot to Bernakie slugs you could kill from a mouse to the elephant. Hell with military shells you can cause serous expolsive damage. you can have soft recoil shells as well as 3.5 in mags if you feel you need it but 3in should cover most.

    I vote pump-action shotgun.

There is a reason they have been around for over 115 years with very little design updates. Because they work. Anything from hunting to self-defense, if something in North America needs killin', the 12 gauge can do it.

There is nothing on earth that cannot be killed with a 12 ga rifled slug if you are close enough....I have been hunting, and the only thing that I could have shot was some type of bird...If you are really hungry even a crow or a woodpecker would keep you alive. No question in my mind...Remington 870, preferably a marine magnum or something with a lot of stainless parts....

    Yep, you said it.

So you're not trying to answer the question, but rather explain how magnificent you are at long range.

My AR with my hand loads no question. 1911 by my side as a backer

Pick one, you're still not answering the question.
