Had 1 doe at 0700 come in a stood broad side at 30 yrs. Unfortunately my son missed her. Oh well first morning, will be heading back out this afternoon. I have not seen any rutting activity around DeKalb Co. yet. Maybe I am just missing it or not in the right place at the right time. Good Luck all!!
Well today was a good one for me. I'll write up a long post later but I got my first ever deer and I'm 33! Used my .458 socom from Rock river. It was about a 15 yard shot. I was actually done for the day and was looking for another tree to put a stand on and then a doe came up and this guy was behind her. I was standing behind the tree I wanted to put a Stand in. He saw me and the doe was warning him but he had one thing on his mind! So he turned and started following her again and I got a open shot and boom. He ran 30 yds and caught a low branch and stopped there.
Until 10am, didn't see anything but heard 20 or more shots throughout the morning. There was a guy on the neighboring property 500 yards away. Heard his can call quite a bit, then he shot 3 times and climbed down after a bit.
went over to the other side of the farm and jumped a 1.5yo 6 pointer, he was just standing at the edge of the woods. Walked down to see if my cousin's boy was in his stand and found
sent cousin a text asking where he was, texted back sayin he was in bed dead asleep with gun at foot of bed. heh, they'll be out with a chainsaw pretty soon and he's gonna show me a better spot further down in the woods.
Though from the sounds of things some guys on neighboring properties were having more fun. Was in my stand in Boone co. by ten after six. Heard my first shot at 6:18. I don't know how anybody could even see a deer let alone hit one with such low light. Judging by the gun shots, most activity seemed to be around 7:30. I saw two young does at about 60 yards and passed on them. Saw a younger buck with good potential with half his rack missing already. Passed on him to let him grow a bit. Had two coyotes out in the field about 200 yards out. Called one of them in at a full sprint to 24 yards before he spotted me in the tree and came to a screeching halt. I had to take a shot through some branches, but didn't want this coyote to get educated to the call, so took the shot and made it. The 1894 .44 mag with 240 grain xtps has proven to be quite potent yote medicine. . Good luck this evening everybody. I'll hopefully be back at it in the morning.
Saw 4 does and 5 bucks this morning!.. every doe that i saw had a buck chasing behind her and i passed on a nice one, hopefully i don't end up regretting this come Jan. 6th. It is chaos out there! i heard everything from what sounded like a canon to burst mode. I guess one shot, one kill does not apply to gun season?
Killed a big doe at 124 yds with my 77/44. It has drawn it's first blood!. I passed on a little 2 1/2 year old right beneath me. If it had been a doe the Bisley would have got to play.
Grunted in a nice 10 point this morning at 0830 in the HNF. 62 yard shot with my 358 Hoosier. Went 20 yards and began to pile up. Unfortunately he rolled to the valley floor which left me with a 1 hour drag to get him out.
