For the record, I love the infra-red burner on my grill.

We have an infra-red grill, and it took me a while to get used to it because it doesn't sear as hard as a traditional grill. But I just put all of the burners on high to get the sear and then turn them down. I like it better then my old one now.

Ours has three traditional gas burners and one infrared. The infrared burns at about 600 degrees. It sears meat great.
