What will closing down the highway with a protest actually accomplished?

Well - it certainly demonstrates the lack of sense in these demonstrations that they think walking into traffic is a good idea. I would certainly fell worse for a driver who hits one the protesters than for the person intentionally walking into traffic.

They want attention. Being disruptive gets them that attention.

I wonder how they feel about all of the crime that is committed while the police are diverted? How many people get delayed ambulance/fire service because of this?

The simple answer - they don't care.
