This thread is chalk full of win. I would imagine the best way to prep for a nuclear (plant) disaster is to keep gas in the car.
    ^^^THIS^^^

The only use a gas mask in a nuclear emergency is to keep the radioactive particulate matter out of your insides. It must be employed in layers with a hazmat/bunny suit to keep the radioactive particulate matter off of your clothes and skin as well. One without the other is pointless.

And even when you have a perfect envelope around yourself to keep the radioactive particulate matter from direct physical contact with yourself, it does nothing about the radiation that that radioactive particulate matter emits. That stuff goes zipping right through feet of lead. Best defense is absence.

To that end, the point of the gas mask (make sure it's capable of filtering the smallest of radioactive particulate matter) and bunny suit is so that after you G.O.O.D., after you get out of the radiation zone, after you reach safe harbour, you can take all of that safety equipment off, put it back in the car, and then dissociate yourself from all of that contaminated nuclear waste.

Potassium iodide is the preferred salt. Iodate works, but takes longer to be effective. Also, within two days most fallout will have made it out of the atmosphere. Sooner if it rains. If you can survive the first 72 hours, assuming you're outside of the blast radius, then odds are good you'll survive.

Works for what? Protecting anything but your thyroid?

Welcome to the good 'ole boys club where you are the only one that isn't allowed to make stupid posts.

I thought you had to be in the good ol' boy club to make stupid posts....

Is, isn't, whichever. At least the gas mask can be repurposed for something it is good for, like when the NWO JBTs come around, you know, gassing you.

The OP would have been far better off on spending his Monies on Duck Tape and Rolls of 10mil Visquene, instead of buying Gas Masks and Potassium iodide...

I was a nuke, and I endorse this idea....

Not that iodine tabs will do much for you, but it's a short term solution for a GTFOOD situation. Long term, it'd kill you just as throroughly as the radiation and contamination.

Gas mask...it would really depend on how good the filters are, or if it is a positive air pressure mask. Every little bit you'd do would help, but if you're dealing with such a situation, your best bet would be to take what precautions you can, and then head directly perpendicular to the direction of wind, getting out of the path of fallout. (Which is radioactive contamination, NOT RADIATION. Now it produces radiation, but just remember, the radiation has to come from somewhere, and that is usually in the form of dust in this kind of SHTF situation.) Once free from direction of wind travel, Decon yourself as much as possible. (Even if this means stopping in the middle of the road and jumping in that dirty-oily pond there on the side of the road.) Scrub down and only THEN get back in your method of transport and proceed to E&E.
