Anyone remember when Dale Jarrett was 2 laps down at the brickyard and raced his butt off to get back to the lead lap? And then went and done something crazy like win the race!?
Now that was some good racing days! There should be a nascars rerun thread. Where we can relive some good racing...
edit: sorry I went back to read that race and Jarrett crashed in practice giving him a mid pack start before winning.(‘96)
In 98 he went 4 laps down and got back to the lead lap.
Got my facts mixed. Lots of Bud-wise-er in those years!
Remember when Bill Elliott went 2 laps down due to an oil pump fitting problem at Talledega...and then raced his way back to to the lead lap and won? That was in 1985 and was all done under the green flag. He was gaining over a second a lap on the leader (Cale Yarborough) if memeory serves correctly. The average speed for that race was like 186 mph.

IndyCar is putting on much better races IMHO and it's a "spec" series now, too. But hey, I'm biased and perfectly willing to acknowledge it.
When they introduced the "Bumper" Cam. That was too freaking cool. The black #3 comes sailing up on the target.....you think he is making contact. You would swear he is making contact but the side shot shows a faint glimmer of light between the bumpers. He would assist the lead car up through the pack and then break off when the time was right.......For him...
Man I miss those days.
OK now you guys can flame me..............I am ready....
Yes I remember. WTF have these idiots done.
They F'd it up by outlawing anything that takes advantage of the rules. They made it a socialist series lol. NASCAR might as well fully capitalize on the "spec series" by building their spec chassis and selling it to teams.
Oh how far they have gone
I wonder how deep that toilet drain is.
EDIT:
I shouldn't gripe. It's still racing but I continue to judge it by the older and cooler Nascar. This new sterilized version can't keep my attention from one commercial to the next.

Awesome Bill from....
NASCAR flashback: Remember when Sterling Marlin got out of his car to do some fender control during a red flag? Classic moment in history!
We used to got down for the last race of the season at the then "AIR" south of Atlanta. We had the Hendricks hook up. We watched Dale Sr. and awesome bill run lap after lap after lap door handle to door handle swapping high/low lines for what seemed forever. Never bobbled. Never touched. Smooth as a new mirror. That was racing. No bunched up pack Bravo Sierra just 2 of the bet going at it clean and simple.
What do you mean Hendricks hook up? I know you got to hang with some good folks from you stories.
Well, yes, but.....
Fenders on an "Open Wheel" race car.....
It is sad to see auto racing (NASCAR, Indy) die but it is all a spec series now and you can blame rules packages all you want but technology is the real culprit. When they no longer could keep the cars earthbound without wings and aerodynamics there had to be rules on body configuration. As engineers dialed in precision engines, chassis etc. rules had to follow to keep the cars on the track. Now we have gotten to the absurdity of penalty for incorrect bolts.
I see no way to return to the days of old, technology is just to advanced, the golden years of auto racing were the product of innovation before racing hit the physical universal limits.
