So, I decided to open carry today here in Muncie. I never really considered it as an option until I saw several threads on the topic. I didn't have any trouble at Best Buy or the North Wal-Mart, barely any looks even. I did, however, have less luck at the Muncie mall. The woman at the service desk noticed my pistol and seemed a little scared. She asked me if I had me "little permit thing" and I told her I did. She then called a security guard over just to check the mall policy. The guard was quite polite, but said I would have to take it out to my car. I said ok, then we will go somewhere else.
I have CC'd a hundred times in the mall so I didn't know their policy and saw no obvious signs. I am curious as to anyone else's experience carrying around the Muncie area.

Malls seem to be big on that, when I get my LTCH, I'm not even gonna bother trying to OC in the mall up here in Hobart.

Not surprised you had a problem at the mall. At least they were polite and asked you to leave in the car instead of calling LE.

If they have no signs posted they are supposed to. If the Muncie mall is a Simon mall they definitely don't allow any type of carry.

I would go back and check again for any signs. If you don't find any go to the mall office and ask to speak to a manager to clarify mall policy.

I avoid the mall as much as possible. If I have to go I just cover up and chuckle as I walk by the no firearms allowed sign.

Prior Albany resident here with plenty of experience in the Muncie Mall. Yes, they are Simon owned so they are generally gun unfriendly. I have never tried to OC there because of knowing who they are owned/managed by.

Congrats on joining the OC club!

Signs are at the entrances (on the side walls) but they carry no weight. The mall personnel are entitled to ask you to leave. I always throw my shirt over if I go to the mall, but it isn't one of my regular stops.

Thanks for posting your experience. I'm really surprised that Best Buy and Wal-Mart didn't throw hissy fits. That's kinda encouraging.

I OC in the Noblesville Walmart and Best Buy all the time and have never had a problem. I get really good service in Best Buy when I do, for some reason.

Me and a friend have both open carried in the Walmart in Muncie at the same time. And he even bought another gun while we were there, lol. The funny part is the manager had to escort us to the front with the rifle my friend bought. But knew we were both carrying. lol.

Yes. I went back and there is a sign in the breezeway between doors with a list of general conduct rules with the "no guns" a few down from the top. I very rarely take my family to the mall. We were just killing time. Next time though, I'll just cover up.

All they can do is ask you to leave, or take it to your car. They can only press charges for trespassing if you refuse to leave.

Never had a negative experience at either while carrying.

I honestly prefer shopping at target over walmart. I also like that Targets hard and fast corporate policy is like Cabelas. State law is what target allows. Target is pro gun and pro carry (open or concealed). You won't get that corporate statement from walmart, lol.

Granted I was not employed at the one in Muncie but I was in Evansville and Best Buy was very gun friendly. We had multiple occasions where we had open carry there and no one even noticed. I asked our security guys (ones in yellow shirts) and they said well if they were bad guys, don't you think they would have already started shooting?? our employees may not have been up to date on laws but in the two years i worked there we never had any desputes with those who excercised their open carry rights. just my :twocents:.

Many will argue many different things..

Open carry can be argued as a deterrant. You'll not generally find hard facts to tell this, but lots of folks theorize that if someone is thinking about robbing a gas station and see someone inside already armed, they'll think twice. Opponents to OC say that the bad guy will just shoot the armed person first, but there's not really any verifiable evidence to prove this idea.

Others will say that an openly-carried firearm is easier to access. Mostly true, I'd say.

For lots of folks, it's a comfort issue. Why buy and wear pants that are too big so you can carry IWB if you could wear pants you like and carry OWB, exposed??

This isn't to argue one way or another - just some statements of what people feel..

Thanks for shareing your experience, I did not know about the SIMON malls.
    on the OC vs. CC
I'v also heard good arguments from both sides, I personally will not OC in Aprox. 30 days when I get my LTCH, I have my own set of reasons, being.
I am 21.... People do not pay so much mind to a bit older fellow- when I see someone carrying period open or not, I think "He's a cop" and pretty well leave it at that. When people see me I look young to have a gun less likely be a LEO so I fear a lot of "SOME KID HAS A GUN" calls
my second being if someone attemps do something, and I deam that I need my pistola. Me being not really a big enouph guy to want to do a lot of wrestling "especially for my pistol" I would prefer to wait for a moment when they did not pay me any attn. and surprise them with a face full of hydrashocks.. "I can however hold my own in a tussle pretty well for a small guy =)"
All and all I think It's moslty just about being comfortable and if I find Iam comfortable with OC I will do so.

i can vouch for the statement about being stereotyped with a gun.
in june my g/f and a friend of mine were pulled over by multiple cops on the highway, we are talking close to 20 cop cars. All armed with their AR15's and shotguns, the very few who was not armed with the above mentioned had their Glock's out. All were very rude and kind of cocky about it. They also hit on my girlfriend a couple of time. Especially while handcuffing us. Keep in mind these guys are in their 40's and 50's, and she was 17 at the time. Also I found out later through a friend who is a cop we got called in as 3 mexican males with arms, and that the guy who called it in was an off duty cop who had seen two of our pistols in the back seat of my friends car while we were driving home from the shooting range.

Then about a few months later, a friend and I were pulled over while passing through Ball state campus by to rent a cops. One was just a flat out cocky ass, but the other was pretty cool. He asked my friend if he was armed because my friend had his hands on the dash. When my friend responded with a yes, the cop started screaming gun, then told my friend how much trouble he was in for having a gun. Even though my friend told him multiple times that he has a LTCH. The "cop" looked at him, as if it wasn't true, and continued to harass him. He went as far as to harass him about the gun he was carrying. *A glock 22* So that caused him to call it in to see if it was stolen. When it came back as legal. The "cop" at this point tried to just find something to pin on us, because he was pissed hardcore at this point. But yeah.... my point being after incidents like this from the boy in blue of Muncie. I think I will just CCW for awhile when my permit comes in.
