Although the movies were entertaining, I thought it was a travesty what they did to the story. It was like Peter Jackson took a butcher's knife to a masterpiece of literature. That said, the scene with Gandalf vs. the Balrog was exactly the way it played in my head any time I read the book.

Yes, one of the standouts was the entire omission of the scourging of Bag End
by Sauramon. Entirely cut out and only a snip of his fate of being killed by
Worm tongue not at Isenguard but Bag End. Thats kind of the issue with
reading the book and getting a "Hey - that's not how it goes" while you
    are watching.

Agreed. To me, the whole series was about the hobbits leaving the shire as meek and timid youths (picture the scene where they all show up at the inn before they meet Strider and are looking up at the bartender), and returning as heroes. Saving the shire is the culmination of all they'd learned, and Jackson didn't even film it.

Not to turn this into a LOTR dork fest... but where the frick was Tom Bombadil? The most important character in the entire series if you ask me...

QFT. Although, I understand why he was left out. Your average movie viewer wouldn't have a clue why Tom was in there, and the translation from book to film would have been difficult (if not impossible) to achieve. The critics would just claim that all it did was destroy the flow and slow down the whole first movie, and they'd be wrong.

I sense some cheating going on with the genres and multiple entries.:nono:

In your opinion, what is the greatest movie ever made?

Mine is Mr. Smith goes to Washington

is - implying a singular object should follow.

the - implying a singular noun (possibly modified by an adjective) will follow.

movie - not to be confused with the plural, movies (moo-veez.)

To you I offer one quote:

I don't want to talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper. I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries. Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time.

Hey, lay off man...Naming just one favorite movie is nearly impossible...Like eating Lays Potato Chips.

No one north of Indiana SR-28 can eat ANY Lay's potato chips.
    WHY?
Because Lay's lost a lawsuit to Jay's. They cannot sell LAYS chips N of Indiana SR 28. They must be labeled FRITO-LAYS. The opposite is not true. (contra-positive?)

Ok..so many choices but by category my favorites are:

    Classic: Seven Days in May

Comedy: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

Western: a three-way tie between Unforgiven, Lonesome Dove, and The Wild Bunch

Drama: The Godfather, parts 1, 2 AND 3!

War: another three-way tie between Saving Private Ryan, Gettysburg, and The Longest Day.

Ok...so that's like eleven favorite movies and I'm sure as soon as I hit "submit" I'll think of 37 more that I should have listed.
