I'm about to buy a lever gun and wanted to get a 30-30, because it is the most popular round in the U.S. I'm reading the regs on the DNR site and 30-30 doesn't seem to be allowed. What the heck? :xmad:

    Yep, it's true.

Even with todays high power muzzleloaders and the fact that high pressure handgun cartridges ARE approved, the State of Indiana has yet to give the nod to the 30-30. Doesn't make sense, but welcome to Indiana politics!

Something just don't make sense. I hope the proposed changes pass regarding the cartridge length...if so I might just have to put together a 450 bushy AR for next year....keeping fingers crossed!

I'm getting ready to convert an Ishapore Enfield to 450 Bushmaster. I plan on Indiana deer and some elk in the future.

Does anyone know the history of why the rules were written the way they are? Are they at the sole discretion of the DNR or is it the legislature?

What difference does it make, it's a rule. Be darn glad you can use a rifle that chambers a pistol caliber. I guess your 5th post will wonder who sets the speed limit on a state highway, the Dot or a Politician. The movement to allow a PCR for deer was started by a few of us twenty years ago to allow only straight walled cases, put politics doomed it until a few years ago when the minimum and maximum lengths for the cases were set, but allowed the inclusion of a shoulder. That's why there are a lot of people having custom guns make "to fit the rules." And why can't you use a .300 Magnum, .270, .264 to hunt deer, but can use them to take a coyote? How many are in the field on opening day of deer gun season versus how many are out there for other game in another season. Common sense, but then it's not that common today. Go ahead and buy that thutty thutty and have fun shooting it, but also buy a legal PCR to hunt deer with, they are a blast. And the 30-30 is no longer the favorite cartridge of America. It used to be the 30-06, but that is no longer. Seems your pick of caliber isn't even on the list. Could be that you "heard" some where that there have been more deer taken with your choice than any other caliber.

Well KW, I was one of those guys who helped start the deal that long ago, and it ruffles my feathers when a "Johnie Come Lately" want to change the rules to suit him. Remember the guy who wanted to legalize the 10mm for deer hunting? Let him start going to all the NRC meetings and get the rules changed, just like we did long ago. The Net just ain't the place. Maybe be place to find the info for time and place for the meetings, but that's all. He would learn more about the what's and why's there than here. BTW, got a WWG Large Loop Lever on my Marlin 1994 in .44 Magnum, and put a Nikon 2.5 X 10 in Burris mounts the other day. Luv that little rifle. Glad your where your at instead of the Mill?

Allright tenring, enough is enough. You cannot make posts like this and not include pics of your new rifle:hijack:

Seriously, I need to see it!
I have a Ruger 44 carbine with a vintage redfield scope, but I lent it to a buddy for his son to use during the youth season. I'll try to get a pic after the weekend.

Okay, not that I need any more abuse, but, why is the 45-70 GOVT not allowed? That's a beast of a round.
