    Define "train"

roll around, jump on one foot, spin around, jump over a sofa, hood slide on a car, take cover behind a potted plant, tackle a tree after your kids yells "fight", chase live chickens to increase foot speed, look into a mirror and say "you talking to me" 100 times, spend time online talking about training for minimum of 1 hour, read the latest Guns & Ammo, American Handgunner, Combat Handguns, Guns, Shotgun News, and do one mad libs page, clean gun, surf web for deals on tactical gear and if time permits go to range and stand and shoot 20 rounds, ammo is expensive

Is there any way to verify that shooting with humans downrange actually better prepares a shooter for a real self defense shooting?

Actually there is a lot of science around the ability to successfully reproduce a skill. Mastery of a skill requires repetitive practice of said skill called "deliberative practice" with deliberate practice it has been shown to better prepare the person to reinact this skill under stress or in any situation.
