I think you added what was outside of ( ) to what was inside when it should be multiplied

First, calculate what's inside parenthesis:
6 ÷ 2 (3) =
Second, calculate the multiplication (implied):
6 ÷ 6 = 1

Why? Because

6 ÷ 2 (2 + 1) =

is either
(A):

2 (2 + 1)

OR
(B):

- X (2 + 1) = 9

A is correct. B is ridiculous. This is one reason why kids are failing in math.

Because you did not perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.

You chose to perform the right multiplication before the left division for some reason.

9 may seem ridiculous, but it is correct.

I hate these. The answer is that there is no single correct answer and no one serious about what they're doing will ever write an expression like that.

There is a current debate about where in the order of operations multiplication by proximity will fall, some mathematicians have one opinion some have another. They're not in any particular hurry to settle on the issue (it's been debated for about the last 70 years or so), because again...no one in their right mind would ever write an expression that looked like that.
