Mine rattled out of the box. I'd assume something was wrong if they weren't a little bit loose. Even though 870s are nice shotguns, I wouldn't trade my Mossberg for one.

The ak was built on loose tolerances, and yet its more reliable than an ar-15... maybe precision to the nth degree isnt the best thing in the firearm world. I dont plan on dropping my shotgun in the mud, and I clean it every time I go shoot, but I bet youd have a lot more problems with a "tight" 870 when it gets dirty... if functionality is your argument anyway.

As I said, its a tool, it works, to each his own :dunno:

The Mossberg 500 was designed sloppy for the same reason the AK47 was — sloppy means it will work even if production parts are a little "off" or there is a little dirt in the action. There is no practical way to remove the rattle.

My 500 has been tossed down into mud a time or 2 and snow several times. It didn't mind and functioned fine. The mud did quiet the rattle a little though.
