Is it legal to hunt deer with a .243 in a pistol in the state of Indiana?

I think your question is... Is a .243 Winchester a legal cartridge legal to hunt deer with in Indiana. As there are different guns that fire a .243 round via wildcat loads. Plus .243AI (ackley improved).

I met you at Indygunworks shop and saw your .243 pistol (very nice indeed). It shoots a .243win cartridge. That is not legal to hunt with in Indiana.

HERE IS WHY:

http://www.bfgcartridges.com/
We (bfgcartridges) specialize in maximizing the potential within the
definitions of the Indiana "Pistol Caliber Rifle".

The rifle cartridge must:

(A) have a bullet of three hundred fifty-seven thousandths of an
inch (.357) diameter or larger;

Does Not meet requirments .243 <.357

(B) have a minimum case length of one and sixteen hundredths
(1.16) inches; and
Meets requirements.... .243 case is about 2.0449

(C) have a maximum case length of one and six hundred
twenty-five thousandths (1.625) inches
Does NOT meet requirements ......... A .243 case is about 2.0449 > 1.625

I feel I stand corrected....Nothing in the law about a max case length.

Handguns
Handguns, other than muzzleloading, must have a barrel at least 4 inches long and must fire a bullet of .243-inch diameter or larger. The handgun cartridge case, without the bullet, must be at least 1.16 inches long.

Full metal-jacketed bullets are not permitted.
Handguns are not permitted on any military areas.
Some types of handgun cartridges legal for deer hunting include:
.357 Magnum
.41 Magnum
.44 Magnum
.44 Special
.45 Colt
.45 Long Colt
.45 Winchester Magnum
.35 Remington
.357 Herrett.
Some illegal handgun cartridges for deer hunting are 38 Special, 38 Smith and Wesson, 38 Colt New Police, 38/200, 38 Long Colt, 38 Super, 38 ACP, 38 Colt Auto, 45 ACP, 45 Automatic and 45 Auto Rim. All 25/20, 32/20 and 30 carbine ammunition is prohibited also.

Let's look at the actual Code: 312 IAC 9-3-3 Equipment for deer hunting

(2) A handgun must:
(A) conform to the requirements of IC 35-47-2; (this section has to do with licensing, legality of ownership, carrying, defacing S/N and so forth)
(B) have a barrel at least four (4) inches long;
(C) fire a bullet of two hundred forty-three thousandths (.243) inch diameter or larger; and
(D) not be a rifle that has a barrel less than eighteen (18) inches or is designed or redesigned to be fired from the
shoulder.
The handgun cartridge case, without bullet, must be at least one and sixteen-hundredths (1.16) inches long. Full metal jacketed
bullets are unlawful. All 25/20, 32/20, 30 carbine, and 38 special ammunition is prohibited.

Your .243Win in a handgun (with at least a 4" barrel :D) is legal.

I hunted with a Savage Striker in .243 for several years. Never had anyone question its legality. I does fall within the definition of legal handguns as outlined in all the regs. that I have seen.

Glad we got that cleared up. :D

I was thinking that the cartridges were discussed in the Indiana Code / hunting regs... But I couldn't remember if the delivery vehicle was.

Not to stir the pot, but I was wondering while reading this thread; what pistol is chambered in 458 SOCOM? It is legal in a "pistol caliber rifle for deer hunting, but I haven't found a pistol that is chambered in it.

Seems to me like the folks making the regs regarding this are mucking it up w/ their micro managing. It would seem to make more sense to say something like, "deer may be hunted with any firearm with a bullet diameter of .243 or larger", or something like that.

Is your HK registered as a handgun? I was wondering the same thing about using an AK pistol with 8 inch barrel and this is what I found.
If it was a rifle and you put a short barrel on it it is now a short barrel rifle, if it is originally a pistol then you are ok.
By definition to be a pistol it is made to shoot with one hand. There is a lot of fine print and I have never gotten a clear answer, but IMO I would say yes, ask a CO and I'm sure you would prob get a ticket just for asking!
