All "public" employees should be paid free of income tax.

As it stands, the burden on taxpayers' income is increased by taxes imposed to cover the income tax on the compensation paid the public employee.

For example: Joe Q. Public Employee is paid compensation of $100 funded by American taxpayer. Joe Q. Public pays income tax of $25 on that compensation (for illustrative purposes) and takes home $75.

Pay Joe Q. Public Employee $75 and leave more money in the hands of the American taxpayer who are actually funding the cost.

I like it......but, you know they would just blow it.

Better than having the federal government blow it.

When an individual blows his money, he suffers the consequences.

When the federal government blows the money, we all suffer the consequences (or, more accurately, our children and their children's children suffer the consequences).

The feds do not have a revenue problem. They have one heck of a spending problem.

Medical coverage? Who needs that? I mean since you CHOSE to work for the gov you CHOSE all of this to happen to you...(sarcasm)

You are most correct Sir. They chose to work for this employer. They chose to work for an employer that could furlough them. They chose to work for an employer where they would lose health coverage.

    Except...

FAKE NEWS! Federal employees do NOT go without health coverage, at least according to the Office of Personnel Management.

According to the OPM, yes. Federal employees do not lose health coverage.

However, a contractor may(?) depending upon their employers policies. But, according to an NPR story, most (~95%) federal contractor companies do continue coverage.

No effect on me, but my better half is affected. They need to import some live animals from abroad (not going into details), and the permits to do that cannot be issued due to the shutdown. She's irate, but I'm just going as usual.

I agree and recognized the idiocy of it back when I first joined the Army. It's like a self licking ice cream cone for the IRS. Uncle Sam hands me some cash, then makes me hand some of it back, then makes me fill out paperwork to demonstrate I handed the right amount back. WTFO.

i'm working as a sub at Crane and everything is running as normal as far as i can tell....

For once the Department of Defense (DOD) is not affected by this shutdown, as the Defense budget was passed before this fight began. As a DOD employee, I can relate to the current shutdown, as DOD is usually impacted. Just a reminder, in 2013 under Obama, when DOD was hit with the 20% sequestration, I was forced to take 11 unpaid furlough days - basically every other Friday for several months. Although I enjoyed the three day weekends, I did not receive back pay for those days, just had to suck it up and press on.

Shutdowns and furloughs are facts of life for Federal employees with the way budgets are funded by Congress and approved by the President. Just need to prepare and roll with the punches!

I mailed in my C&R renewal paperwork last week, along with my check.

My check was cashed today by the BATFE. So the USPS and the BATFE are both working for me.

From my point of view it is at 100%.

Of course, the USPS lost a book I had ordered from Amazon, so we'll see if they can find it and deliver it to the right address today...?

I wonder if the shutdown is related to the tax problems that may be on the way. When the tax revisions were passed early in this administration, they were heralded as a great thing. My back of the napkin estimating suggests that my net result will be about the same as before, or a bit worse. (But, that may have happened even without the tax changes, so I'm not bashing Trump for that at this point.)

A shutdown that delays, or allows for manipulation (like no audits this year), taxes is a short term gain, with long term negative effects.
