When ya think about this, its really no different than a two-ship of Tu-95s buzzing offshore either coast.

Or an Iranian P3 overflying a CBG.

Yes, we used to love to play with the P-3s. Most of those guys were trained by the Brits and speak very good english. Back in the day they were very friendly and respectful when they had an F-14 off of one wing and another on their six.

By contrast, this is the actual ship in question, which is a tanker with a 76mm OTO-Malera and a couple of 23mm Russian guns, and provision for a couple of helicopters:

If that's the helicopter tanker/transport in the background, is the ship in the foreground the destroyer mentioned in th OP?

The Iranians better be careful. Everyone in America loses their guns in horrible boating accidents...
    Could happen to them too.

I doubt the USN will pay any attention at all to them. What's the threat? It they actually come close to territorial waters any of our CG/DDG/FFG could take them out without even getting underway. Not to mention an SSN. They would be abandoning ship before they even knew we were there. Tacair is also quite effective. I am not concerned in the least.

Yes! We could steal their identity and ruin their credit... that'll fix 'em! ;)

Seriously, I am certain that the 'destroyer' in question is an Alvand-class frigate, which is actually smallish by frigate standards.
