Indiana School Choice Programs

So I haven't been back to see the full effects, but I'm pretty sure tax bills haven't increased from Mitch Daniel's School Choice Program.Am I wrong?

You have to remember that despite all the $$$ spent on education in Indiana under that idiot McCormick while she was the State Superintendent of Education, Indiana still ranks in the lower bottom tier of the 50 states in successful education for the State’s students.

She is now a Democrap running for governor and touts the fact that she changed political parties. This idiot pledges to use “common sense solutions” towing the Democrap socialist ideology to govern Indiana. What cow manure!

I educated my sons back home in Maryland for a reason. I would have had to commute them to Burris in Muncie for a school that was comparable to the schools local to home.

While I worked in academia here, following several Purdue Professors to Indy for education administrative review boards, my impression was School Choice being a chance to escape the hellscape of Indiana public education system and take your tax dollars to help fund your chance. I would think that would be a good thing for taxpayers?

When I was working in it back in 2012, it was as bad as working in DC. Tons of money being thrown in without any result. Regardless of who was in charge and how much money was funding the program, public education was just not delivering.

The good part in DC for the "Haves" is there are plenty of great private schools available to those that can afford it. Or go Catholic and send your kids to one of their schools. One also can move to Montgomery co for good schools.

We lived on the other side of the Potomac. There were plenty of townhall fights in Alexandria over public school admissions for TJ. We were lucky Falls Church was rather small so there was only one school and it was never at capacity. Knowing some of the teachers there, I still would opt for private education.

Does anyone know if the money is being pulled out or if they are levying higher property taxes? Because I cannot find anything to substantiate this $600mil claim.

When the Washington Township referendum passed, it was supposed to go to increase teacher pay. My property taxes increased $1000 a year.

Now I see North Central and Northview adding top-of-the-line new sports facilities. Doesn’t look like that money went to the teachers after all. And I have to pay for it, even though I have no children [that attend or use those facilities].

I was educated in Bethesda. Lots of my friends went to private schools like, Georgetown Prep, St John's, Gonzaga, The Heights, Holy Cross, Sidwell Friends, Immaculate and many other schools.
When I attended HS it was in the top ten in the nation. If my dad lived 4 blocks over we would have attended Walt Whitman HS. It's still ranks 139 in the nation, it was in the top 5 back then.

So the tax increases and shortfalls are from the public side, not the voucher side? Or is it because school choice vouchers are taking money away from the public side. so they are taking more taxes from you?

Anything north of Tenleytown had good schools, but usually because that's where the car jackings stopped. Still got coworkers around there, they're kids go to Gaithersburg and Germantown. We saw Herndon schools get better during our time after more people moved out there and taxes shot up when property valuation shot up.
Wife is Catholic so the private parochial schools were always our goal, and they were really good in Northern Virginia. With Winsome Sears (probably the most 2A VA Lt.Gov. ever) support for VA EdChoice expansion, it got a lot easier for many families. IDK much about the "tax shortfall" from it because they always had higher average tax.

I'm not sure how the taxpayers are on the hook for more when the school choice program actually saves the state money. The vouchers available to indiana students are a fraction of the per student cost of educating a student in the public school system.

My kids use vouchers to attend a private school. Vouchers cover in the neighborhood of $5000 per student and this amount is dependent on a number of factors including the school district in which you live, household income, etc. There is not a huge variation in the award amount so $5k is a good average. The latest per child state spending I could find in a quick search was from 2020 and the average was $9,566 per kid and its definitely higher than that now. So I don't understand how the state is spending more money when their outlays for vouchers should be approaching 50% of the cost of funding a student in the public school system.

I expect them to attack public school choice as well. I read an editorial in the paper bemoaning the ability of parents to choose the PUBLIC school their kids attend as well. The editorial was loaded up with talking points. I imagine the amount of kids going to an out-of-district school far exceeds those that go to private school so they are starting with the low hanging fruit.
