When I was still on the job I had a grandmotherly lady ask me if I wanted to buy a gun from her that had belonged to her late husband that she described as a "pirate pistol." Upon examination it proved to be a Fox double barrel sawed down flush with the forearm in front and into a pistol grip in back.

I carefully explained to the lady her legal peril and advised her to have a trusted relative consign it to the nearest large deep body of water.

A damascus barrel is made by taking a strip of steel, heating it up and winding it around a long bar, using a hammer to "weld" it together. It is much cheaper to make back then. But the drawback is they aren't that strong.

    It's like forge welding.

Yep, however back in the 1950's my cousin and I used to hunt rabbits and ducks with a single shot damascus barrel shotgun that belonged to my uncle ~ not knowing they were not safe! Can't say how many 2 3/4 cartridges we fired through the old gun with some being magnums, but never had any issues. Of course I would never try that today, but I guess ignorance is bliss (till the barrel unwraps). As I recall, the warnings that came out during that era said that most were safe, but some with inferior metal or manufacture would fail, upon reading the warnings we stopped using the gun. I am quite sure many of the hunters of that era were shooting these before they read the warnings. Guess we were lucky.....

My SBS works great. I'm not sure what you are afraid of.

Haha that's actually pretty cool looking. Keyword there is "looking". It would probably be a pain in the butt (or wrist) to fire.
