I'll say an AR due to the ease of changing calibers. I could have multiple uppers in different calibers and just swamp em out.

    cheater :D

I went M1A... I have never had a FAL and I am starting to feel like I have been missing out. I like the .308 round.

AK-47. Reliable, low maintenance, and the side mount scope makes it very easy to have yours accessible while having an optic mounted. I don't think anyone will argue against the effectiveness of the 7.62x39. Ammo is cheap (still) and easily available. Cleaning kit mounts easily in the buttstock, making it pretty self contained.

If I was going to carry an AR, it would be an AR-10. The .223 is just too light of a round when confronted by heavy brush or intermediate barriers. It fragments early and often, and while devastating if the first thing it hits is the target, if it passes through something it loses that. I've also seen a tree about the diameter of a large coffee can that found itself in the middle of a two way range and was struck with both a .223 and a 7.62x39 about a foot apart vertically and almost perfectly space horizontally. The .223 stuck in the tree, the 7.62 continued on. Given how much woods we have in IN, I'm thinking the various .30 cal rifles will have an advantage on our terrain.

Might as well bring out a classic..... 30-06, semi auto, and one of the most durable rifles of all time. As long as I have plenty of surplus M2 ball in en blocs laying around

Depends on which continent I'm on... On these shores AR-15 for parts and ammo scavenging. If I was on the other side of the pond, AK or SKS.

AK74...cheap spam can ammo, reliable, easier recoil control than 47, and it's the only long gun I currently own so I kinda have to vote for it. Unloading a magazine of 5.45 isn't as fun 7.62 but for utility I'd prefer the 74.

I would take a Dragunov (in any form) over all rifles for a few reasons....

1 - Cheap Spam Can Ammo (440rds for as cheap as $110) .... this is a BIG and very deadly round for roughly $0.25 cents per round. Can't beat that!
2 - Drag-thru-the-mud reliability (such as the AK platform)
3 - I can defend myself quickly up close (semi auto; magazine fed)
4 - I can hunt from afar with big game accuracy up to 1000 yards

AK-47 because it IS more reliable in battlefield conditions than the m4 or ar15. Accuracy is great for urban combat and ammo will be available. If ammo can't be found then I will find my new weapon system off a dead body or find a thug and relieve him of his. I'm not limited by the weapon I use because I am the weapon and my weapon is a tool. But I will start by relying on a good ole AK47.

That way I can be the hipster of the post apocalyptic world.

Or maybe the ever versatile Marlin 39.

EDIT: for all you that said "cheap ammo"....

Yeah, it's cheap NOW, but in a SHTF, you'll all be clamoring for your 5.56 or 5.45 and I'll easily be able to get .50-70 government rounds.

Seriously, what's "cheap" and "available" can change very, very quickly.
