How to thieves steel modern vehicles? Aren't there simpler counter measures than tracking devices?

    .
The big thing now with vehicles that use key fobs and push-button start is to clone the key fob. I don't know exactly how it works, but that is the main way to steal Chrysler products these days (Charger, Challenger, RAM TRX, Jeep TrackHawk).

Call the cops. Wait for them to get there. If he leaves, try to give them all the information you have and hope they find him, and that he doesn't run and destroy your truck in the process (actual phone call a buddy made: "Well ma'am, good news is we found your van. Bad news is it's currently on fire."). On the upside, if he's actually in possession of it when they recover it, it's easier to get a conviction.

Intentionally confronting him over a vehicle, or even putting yourself in a position where a confrontation could occur, is a bad idea.

Worst case scenario: He shoots you. Now you're dead.

Slightly better scenario, but not much: You shoot him. You're still alive and have possession of your truck. Judge and Jury decided you instigated the confrontation, and you go to prison and share a cell with Big Richard Johnson for the next 20-40 years. Your wife leaves you, your kids are calling some other guy daddy, your dog dies, and the truck is long gone by the time you get out. On the upside, you might get a country song written about you.

Other likely scenario: You shoot him, are found criminally justified, but he or his family sues and you lose 100x what your truck is worth in civil court.

Slightly better likely scenario: You shoot him and are found criminally justified, but you still get sued. You win the lawsuit too. In the process you waste a lot of time in court, live with a lot of stress, and pay your attorneys several times what it would have cost to just go out and buy a brand new truck.

IMO, it just isn't worth it. The cops are paid to do their job, and this is exactly why they have qualified immunity, which you don't. Let your tax dollars do their thing and work for you. Worst case you or your insurance are out the cost of one replacement truck.

It may not be how things should work, but unfortunately it's how they often do. The best fight you can have is the one that doesn't happen.

Call cops and take back possession of vehicle, block it in if possible.
In my eyes, if you yourself waits for the perp, something happens and you shoot him dead.. that would make you in the wrong cause you created the conflic as if it was premeditated. Prosecutor would probably say the same thing and even suggest you waited for the perp to get even.
