I'm way past 40 so I couldn't answer. I have a daughter that is under 40 and pretty sure she couldn't.

The guys out in our automation shop could.

Similar here. Those are experience’s and lessons that are understood at a level an engineer will not know. LOL

It is not just that people don’t have any fundamental experience and ground level knowledge, it is the arrogance with which they push what they don’t have the slightest clue about…
How true. The best engineers I've known are the ones that wrench on their own stuff. The ones that don't will just drag out Spice models and Pareto charts to try show why you're wrong.

    I have a Sunn 3 gauge set.
    Fuel pressure/vac combo.
    DC voltage meter.
    Dwell meter.
Had them for freaking ever but I am 21 years past your base line.

Thing is, if they have them can they use them.
I imagine the majority wouldn't know what a set of points are if you handed them some.
If you handed them a vac guage and told them to adjust the carb you would get a blank stare probably 90% of the time.

Then again if you handed me a laptop and told me to change a tune, I would have a blank stare.

My grandson (age 14) knows his wrenches pretty good but when he saw this in my toolbox he was baffled. He asked me why a bottle opener had a pointy end. I went on to explain to him the importance of a church key.

As it probably should be. How many years have we had F.I. controlled by even a rudimentary ECU.
These kids have most likely never seen or attempted to work on a Carb.
And electronic ignitions are very old news. Now we have crank/cam position sensors talking to the ECU that is setting the timing and firing the plugs.
    It's a new world Amigo.

Oh I agree. Most have probably never even been in a vehicle with a points ignition.
