What do you do to be low key?

I saw a person toss about 20 mountain house boxes out with the trash. That told me alot about them....

Found out from a loud mouth fuel delivery guy, I have someone within a few miles who has two oversized propane tanks, a large fuel tank and a big generator.....Seems homeowner says alittle too much to the wrong people......also bragged he has a years supply of food.

That kind of talk can get you killed.

Give us some low key ideas.......

I just keep my mouth shut. We recycle all cardboard and plastic, I only drop it off early in the am and I never talk to anyone there, except the occassional hi. We also back our car in to unload items in the garage.

A friends parents have two propane tanks painted earth tone colors and weeds growing up all around them. Eventually I put two and two together and figured out why.

I bring my guns in through the garage when I am done shooting and prefer that nobody knows I have them. Also, I only add a few things at a time to my grocery shopping which over a few months can translate into a couple months of stored canned food. I have made the mistake in the past of talking about it with a like minded person in front of other people but now I am more cautious what I say ever.

Make sure you know the difference between 'friends' ... and 'acquaintances' My real-life "friends list" isn't very long at all...... and I'm fine with that.

    :yesway:

Limit work men repair men as much as possible and only permit access to areas where authorized. The Florida Home Invasion killers were former employees and or service people. I shop (necessity) anywhere from 25 to 50 miles from my residence. Service and or delivery people do talk to their friends, neighbors, and no one knows if all of their contacts are legit. Remember the UPS guy that delivered your 50,000 rounds of ammo. He remembers you. I try to keep my barn doors closed as much as possible and house doors that we are not using locked. Not much I can do about my LP tank, it's bright silver but owned by the LP company.

I left out posting photos of your exotic weapons & ammo cache and posting ad nauseam on gun forums ;)

Use cash or M.O. for large questionable purchases.

Why set off bells at Govt. agencies that you just purchased bulk ammo,
    primers and powder.
Same thing when loading up on other questionable items.
If its on a survivor list, its considered questionable.
Bulk batteries, first aid supplies, large fuel purchase when you live in a neighborhood,
Don't think for a minute these type of purchases are not monitored.

Also as stated above, the fewer people that know what you have, the better.

    amen to that!!

Yeah, you have to learn to keep the pie hole shut when talking to others. As excited as you may be about how well prepared you are it will just give others ideas of coming over and begging when SHTF or to come over and shoot you down!

It's not to say you can't get in a conversation with a neighbor about "hey, have you seen them ads on TV about preparedness? Are you prepared in case of a disaster?" I just wouldn't mention the years supply of food , generator and the arsenal that the Canadian Army would be proud of!

I only saw one person mention this..but look at what 4Sarge wrote below.. Limit repair men and delivery people to your house and access to anything you have stored! Word of mouth spreads like wildfire..and gets exaggerated along the way too.

We just finished with having extensive renovation done to our 114-yr-old home. My room and our secure room were off limits, and the construction was escorted everywhere they went. The construction contract specified non-access to either room. The crew groused about it a few times, because it forced them out of the shortest route outside, but got tired of hearing me tell 'em that I was paying the bill.

I know when I bought the hand pump to replace the electric water pump in an emergency. The guy at the hardware was asking lots of questions. So what are you going to use it for. I said long term power outage situations. Why, do you have a lot of power problems. Not so far.... he seemed really confused. I reassured him that we had had family without power for about 2 weeks before and so we are a little more worried about such things than most people. This seemed to calm him. It was really kind of weird, but small towns, you know.

Someone on here several months ago said something that really registered with me. In a long term SHTF scenario can you imagine anything more likely to draw a crowd than the sound of a generator running when there are no other sounds to be heard. And not necessarily a hey, you mind if I join you type crowd.

Not to thread jack but this is related. Lets say you have one of those "friends" (it could be family) that you know if SHTF they would be at your door in a heartbeat. For one you are not prepared to take in extras and 2 even if you were this is not the type of person you want around in that scenario. How do you politely tell them not to bother beforehand. If it comes down to it in a long term SHTF and they show up how do you handle that?

Fire! I burn everything in my fire pit. I have never had friends and except for my parents all my family are hard core criminals that I wont even let know where I live. Having friends would be kinda neat. But Its hard to trust people. But I have my wife, kid and 4 dogs. They like me. :)

I can see this being a real OpSec problem. In a true longterm SHTF scenario, you don't let him in, now he is out shooting off his mouth to everyone he sees about you. Next thing you know, you could have a mob show up at the door demanding to share in your good fortune. Now you are faced with defending you and yours from 20-30 people. Tell you what, if we ever get to a place like that, we could be faced with a lot of really uncomfortable decisions to be made..
