Tulsa World: Woman killed during Tulsa home invasion robbery

by: KELLY HINES World Staff Writer
    6/25/2008 12:00 AM

A woman is dead and her husband is hospitalized after they were shot during a robbery inside their Tulsa home early Wednesday.

The shooting occurred at the intersection of West 39th Street and South Union Avenue about 4 a.m., Officer Leland Ashley of Tulsa Police said. The home owner told officers he woke up to see a person inside his house.

After a struggle, the robber fatally shot the woman and also shot the man in the hand with the couple's own gun, police said.

Investigators are looking for a white or American Indian man in his late teens or early 20s and about 6 feet tall. It is unknown whether the couple knew him.

The man who lived at the home was taken to St. Francis Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. Two of the couple's children, ages 9 and 15, were at home at the time but were not injured, Ashley said.

A neighbor said the woman killed appeared to have been in her early 40s.

    I guess the questions are....

How did the intruder get a hold on the Home Owner's gun?
How did the intruder get into their house without waking the home owners?

What would you do/have in place to prevent this from happening to you?

First, my doors are locked. Would cause a commotion to get inside.
Second, no one could get to my weapon without running over me first.
Third, I have a yapping, guard dog. Six pounds of bark and squeal!

There's just not enough information in that article. The intruder may have entered through an unlocked door or window, may have broken in when when no one was home and hid until everyone was asleep, picked the lock, etc. He may have wrestled the pistol from the homeowner or found it rummaging through the house.

    As far as preventative measures:
    1. Lock doors and windows.
    2. Carry the pistol on your person; when sleeping keep it within arms reach.
    3. Have a dog.
    4. Have a contigency plan.
