    I am not sure it matters if you wear a vest or not - getting hit by an ounce of shot going ~1900 feet per second will homoginize your internal organs. The shock of the impact at close range can be just as deadly.

    Penetration isn't determined by the total weight. It is determined by the mass of the individual pellets. In other words, an ounce of BB sized pellets won't have near the penetration of an ounce of 00 pellets.

    Actually, I wasn't even referring to penetration at all - just the shock of 1 ounce of lead hitting someone at close range creates massive internal injury in and of itself (specifically, in reference to hitting a vest). However, you are exactly correct on individual pellet penetration being greater the larger the size. Again, no matter what your attacker is wearing/not wearing, a 12 gauge shotgun shooting an ounce of pellets is a tremendous weapon at close range - we all can feel pretty safe with one in our hands.
