I don't understand the quote completely. Was he implying that you'd better carry a firearm with penetration capacity, or...?

"If it clears leather" meaning if it comes out of the holster , "it better go bang" meaning you better plan to fire , I think what he was trying to convey was if it is important enough to draw your weapon it is important enough to shoot , not to just pull it out as a scare tactic.

Only out of precaution, but I wouldn't even consider that drawing since I just picked it up off the table. Some drunk guy tried to get in my front door at about 3am. Turns out he was looking for the neighbors. He never saw it, but even in his drunk state he apologised for bothering me lol.

In 30 years of carry, I have never ad to draw my weapon. I have had my hand on it a couple of times though.
