I carry a Sig 226 but also have the High Capacity Bersa in 9mm and would not hesitate to carry it and the price was only $309 when I bought it. Great gun for the price. In some ways I like the ergonomics of it better than the Sig. It will fit in Beretta 92 holsers.

My Sig P6 is my carry gun (when I hadn't screwed up and let my permit expire... grrr). Got it somewhere around the $300 neighborhood. Easy to carry. Decocker. Steel. Accurate enough for me at self-defense distance.

My EAA Witness Elite is hands down my most accurate gun, same size as a CZ-75, but most parts do NOT interchange (maybe no parts...) but an accuracy steal at a shade over $500 when I got it. Manual Safety. Steel. Doublestack, heavy. I've carried it a couple times, not real comfy, but I'm sure a better holster would have done it a world of good.

Big fan of Sig and CZ. Ruger P series are built like TANKS and can be found used very reasonable, but are thick.

Dad swears by his Bersa Thunder, also a good choice.
