I cant imagine him jumping just because the company is tanking. Guys like him still end up with golden parachutes and go on to other jobs.
As to them tanking, I agree its probably not due to conservative backlash/boycotts. But I am sure that is part of it. Probably another casualty of ecommerce + Covid + inflation.

It is more like Hostess. A company that was profitable,then loaded with debt and destroyed.
He had used share buybacks based on loans at a set share price(ie artificially propping up the share price),when the share price dropped below that value margin calls happened and the hundreds of millions Bed bath and beyond had in cash evaporated in an instant. It then could not keep making the payments on the loans it had used to prop up the share price or any other debts it had.
Debtors are of course lined up in court already.
