GenCon threatens to exit Indy over 'religious freedom' measure | 2015-03-24 | Indianapolis Business Journal | IBJ.com

GenCon, Indianapolis’ second-largest convention, is threatening to relocate its massive late-summer annual event to another city if Gov. Mike Pence signs the controversial “religious freedom” bill into law.

“Legislation that could allow for refusal of service or discrimination against our attendees will have a direct negative impact on the state’s economy, and will factor into our decision-making on hosting the convention in the state of Indiana in future years,” GenCon CEO Adrian Swartout said Monday in a letter to Pence.

Their optioins may not be as wide open as they believe...but knee jerk and good luck to them.

Who cares...they want to try and extort a decision from the Governor of Indiana, well they can just haul their happy assess on down the road. They will be missed for a while....then forgotten.

I posted this in the other thread, but I'll drop it here too. Large conventions leaving town should not be dismissed so lightly.

Remember all that public tax money that was used to fund Lucas Oil Stadium? Much of that money is generated by a restaurant and hospitality tax that comes from visitors staying in Indy hotels and eating in Indy restaurants. If the conventions go away the revenue dries up and the rest of us will end up on the hook for that money.

Why will it affect our state any differently than the other 28 states that have a RFRA law or interpret their existing constitutions along the same strict scrutiny of exercise of religion?

Because Indiana is the state currently getting all of the bad press over this. Indy is arguably the biggest convention host city in the U.S. If these conventions decide to take their business elsewhere it becomes an economic issue.

When outside tax revenue dries up, where do you think the legislature will turn to make up for it?

There'll be some new trumped up outrage any minute now. This will be forgotten and not be an issue just like it evey other state.
