Sorry, I have to disagree. We are at a WHO phase 3 and a US level 0 currently.

I serve as an emergency preparedness consultant to a major hospital and our biggest concern right now is mis-information. Please be an informed consumer and check facts as the information about this H1N1 strain of influenza continues to unfold.

    Regards,

    Jim

Sorry if I was wrong, since Stage 4 is the first human case in America, and we have confirmed human cases in America, I made the assumption this was where we are at. There must be other factors not listed to qualify for stage 4.

Was/is not my intent to "slap your wrist" in any way. I am just very concerned that correct information is disseminated, that is all.

An important thing for folks to remember is that we currently do not have a Secretary of Health and Human Services (just as we have an interim director of the CDC), so even the government is trying to figure out who is on first since this is our first real test of the pandemic stages... especially since the prez is busy playing golf!

I'm not in panic mode just yet....of the cases reported in the US, all recovered and only one required a brief hospital stay. I'm not saying that I'm not keeping an eye on this, but I'm gonna try not to give myself an ulcer by doing so.

The cases in Mexico that were fatal, any idea where in Mexico they lived? I'm willing to bet that the infection was exacerbated by poor sanitation and overall health.

I did not take it as a slap, just saw a chart and read it the way I thought it should be read.

I kinda wish people would panic about it, might wake em up and get more people prepped for a possible H5N1 mutation.

Folks, I don't recommend panic... instead I recommend awareness. While I never want any type of emergency, this is an opportune time to learn and to practice your preparedness plans. Avian flu, H5N1 (and its variants) is still lurking and could be the really big deal.

Being close to the border is meaningless. In the 1918 outbreak, the flu was in Indiana within 3 days of appearing on the East coast of the U.S. As we see in this outbreak, modern travel means it is worldwide in hours, not days!

These strains of influenza are of particular concern for the 20-40 y.o population. The better your immune system, the greater potential for mortality. It is your body's immune response that kills you... not the virus itself.

    Regards,

    Jim

Swine flu illness in the United States and Mexico - update 2

26 April 2009 -- As of 26 April 2009, the United States Government has reported 20 laboratory confirmed human cases of swine influenza A/H1N1 (8 in New York, 7 in California, 2 in Texas, 2 in Kansas and 1 in Ohio). All 20 cases have had mild Influenza-Like Illness with only one requiring brief hospitalization. No deaths have been reported. All 20 viruses have the same genetic pattern based on preliminary testing. The virus is being described as a new subtype of A/H1N1 not previously detected in swine or humans.

Also as of 26 April, the Government of Mexico has reported 18 laboratory confirmed cases of swine influenza A/H1N1. Investigation is continuing to clarify the spread and severity of the disease in Mexico. Suspect clinical cases have been reported in 19 of the country's 32 states.

WHO and the Global Alert and Response Network (GOARN) are sending experts to Mexico to work with health authorities. WHO and its partners are actively investigating reports of suspect cases in other Member States as they occur, and are supporting field epidemiology activities, laboratory diagnosis and clinical management.

On Saturday, 25 April, upon the advice of the Emergency Committee called under the rules of the International Health Regulations, the Director-General declared this event a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

WHO is not recommending any travel or trade restrictions.

I'd rather get the illness in the beginning/early.
    Here's why:

    1) it is a mild illness in the USA so far (that's the strain I want to get!) until it mutates
    2) it is susceptible to both Tamiflu & Relenza antiviral Rx's (until it mutates, & it will)
    3) we still have plenty of Tamiflu & Relenza, haven't run out yet!

The EU has now advised against travel to the US because of this.

My question has been pulling at me since yesterday about this...

If the International "CDC" or whatever it's called, classifies this as a pandemic, what all could they start doing? Could they send specialist over here to look for cases? Could they start randomly testing people? Could they lock down whole towns over a couple mild cases? If it starts spreading in numbers like Mexico, could they declare Martial Law and quarantine whole cities and towns?

New swine flu feared to be weaponized strain.
New swine flu feared to be weaponized strain

While he COULD be right about the Swine Flu...

AIDS as a bioweapon? What was the plan? Everyone screw each other to death, literally? I'm sorry, but that's a bit far fetched. Unless it was meant to be an airbourne virus or causual contact virus gone bad... Still though...

Oh yea, AIDS bioweapon plan... Release virus into prisoner. Allow prisoner to sleep with many prostitutes. Wait 15-30 years for effect. Take over Country of dead bodies....

two samples that went to the CDC did not match other strains of flu found locally this year, she said.
