Fifty Years of Math 1959 - 2009 (in the USA )

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter
girl took my $ 2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from
my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3
pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her
discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters , but she
hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to
her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this?

BECAUSE OF THE EVOLUTION OF TEACHING MATH IN THE LAST 50 YEARS:
    1. Teaching Math In 1950s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production
is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit ?

    2. Teaching Math In 1960s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production
is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

    3. Teaching Math In 1970s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production
is $80. Did he make a profit?

    4. Teaching Math In 1980s
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production
is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

    5. Teaching Math In 1990s
A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes?
(There are no wrong answers, and if you feel like crying, it's ok. )

    6. Teaching Math In 2009
Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara $100. El costo de la
producciones es $80. Cuanto dinero ha hecho?

LOL did you explain to her that you gave her the 8 cents so that it made the total an even $1.50 so she could just give you $.50 back? Sheez.

Few things annoy me the way having to repeat my order to the fast-food cashier does.

Why bother? It will still be wrong anyway.

I love when you only order one thing, and they still get it wrong. I have made it a point to COMPLAIN TO THE MANAGER/OWNER every single time this happens. I will not except poor service for anything I am spending my hard earned money for. I normaly get free stuff for my trouble, which I do not accept. I tell them "Free wrong is still wrong. Fix the problem!"

Another on target approach to the truth.

The back and forth debate on the merits of teaching phonics is yet another
    breakdown of the educational system.

Dumb down our kids = Education 101 (not)

+1. Starbucks is the worst. Don't offer 50 options for my coffee if you can't take my order, and then make it the way it was ordered.

My regular Starbucks is awesome. I don't even have to order anymore. My overpriced latte is usually made by the time I get to the register.

Now if they'd just go out of business, I might lose those 20 pounds I've gained the last six months..... :):

No! Thats where the Liberal philosophy is embedded. You go to college and it seems people get even more dumb. Colleges are failures in my book. I hear so much bull:poop: when I'm at college I'm surprised I don't lose brain cells just being there. Colleges are worse than primary schools IMO.

Years ago, I was a manager at a family restaurant. Another manager had hired a new cashier and she was working her first shift with me on a busy weekend night. About midway through the dinner rush, I noticed a long line of people extending across the restaurant and circling half way around the salad bar. Wondering what was going on, I followed the line right up to the cash register only to find the new cashier with a pen and paper writing something down. I looked over her shoulder and what did I see? She was doing the math long hand in order to figure out how much change to give each customer.

As soon as I got over the initial shock that someone could actually be THAT stupid, I told her she was now a bar attendant and was no longer allowed to touch the register. All applicants had to submit to a math test after that.

Math in the year 2525 (assuming we are still alive).... :D

If anyone gets that reference, they get REP! :D

    Now it's been 10,000 years
Man has cried a billion tears
    For what he never knew
    Now man's reign is through
    But through the eternal night
    The twinkling of starlight
    So very far away
    Maybe it's only yesterday

The more things change the more they stay the same. At least this version is better.

Back on topic; Over the last several years I have asked college kids a simple question. "Are they teaching you how to think or what to think?" The majority of the time the answer they give me is "huh?" Every now and then I end up in a very interesting conversation about that question, what it means, and the answer the student gave.
