Supposedly what kills blades is putting them away wet, not our whiskers. There are many who claim that if you can totally dry out your razor and they will last for months if not years.
Ive tried and managed to get two months out of a standard triple blade head... And I'm a wuss who can't handle a dull blade so their theory seems well based.
Eventually I gave up and decided to switch to an electric. It was just easier.
My order arrived today-well, everything but the blades anyway.
I did go ahead and use the Dr Carvers Shave Butter today though. First time using anything like that and already love it.
It's a bit on the pricier side of the shaving supplies spectrum, but I really love this stuff:
Amazon.com: Proraso Shaving Soap, Eucalyptus & Menthol, 5.2 oz (150 ml), New Formulation: Beauty
Does an awesome job, has a great scent, and leaves you with a slight tingle. I used to get really bad psoriasis around my mouth that required pretty constant attention, got away from the cream in a can and haven't had a problem since.

Bigtanker, go get a nice Double Edge handle like this here:
Amazon.com: Merkur Classic Safety Razor, Straight: Health & Personal Care
and pick up these blades:
Amazon.com: Derby Extra Double Edge Razor Blades, 100 Count: Beauty
Now, if you want a great shaving cream I like the Taylor of old Bond Street stuff here:
Amazon.com: Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream Bowl, 5.3-Ounce: Beauty
Now get yourself a nice badger brush:
Amazon.com: Escali 100% Pure Badger Shaving Brush: Health & Personal Care
And you are all set for life (except for maybe $10 every 4-5 years for blades.
My dad learned to shave with a DE blade, and I've used one for over a decade. $30 bought me roughly 15 years worth of blades.
