Not exactly sure what the significance of this is. We have had troops in the Baltics on exercises fairly regularly for years now. My daughter, a Marine LT was in Latvia for about a month last summer as part of a NATO exercise including, at least US, Latvian and British Army units.
    Right.

    So.

Mutual-support and cross-training of regular troops among allies is very common, as you note. In fact, large operations like that are usually planned and broadcast broadly to try and prevent any misunderstandings that could lead to race-to-the-Fulda Gap type scenarios.

In the Baltics and Eastern Europe, post-Ukraine Crisis, there is a different context. The threat of a Russian-sponsored revolt/breakaway/invasion is real. The unimaginable is quite possible.

Having SF types in those countries training on how to fight against such a scenario is a different. In the foreign policy realm, it takes on additional gravity when dealing with a potentially hostile country.

    So, dropping this here.

Marine Le Pen hails patriotism as the policy of the future - BBC News

"The people of the West are awakening. They are throwing off the yoke of political correctness," he said.
"This year will be the year of the people... the year of liberation, the year of the patriotic spring."
Ms Le Pen said Britain's vote to leave the European Union last year would have a domino effect across the European Union (EU)."We are experiencing the return of nation-states," she said.
The year 2016 was characterised by the "awakening of Anglo-Saxon countries", she added, while 2017 "will be the year of the awakening of the people of continental Europe".

So, I somewhat accept her assessment that there is a rise of nationalism across "the West." However, I do not share her optimism that a return to nation-state simplified foreign policy is a good thing.

She is either ignorant of the resource-wars that accompany such an assessment or she is trying to rebrand the concept to her own definition.

Regardless, I do see that trajectory as leading towards WWIII.

    Could be anywhere
The shooting in the Ukraine will probably die down until after winter...right now both sides are probably trying to make statements to the WH. Nobody wants to fight in Russia in the winter; including Russians.

Asymmetrical warfare doesn't mind a bit of chill in the air....

Ukraine conflict: Rebel leader Givi dies in bomb attack - BBC News

Mikhail Tolstykh, known as Givi, died in his office in an explosion described by rebel authorities in Donetsk as a terrorist attack.
...Oleg Anashschenko, who was de facto defence minister of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic (LNR), had been driving in Luhansk when his car blew up on Saturday.

The Russian may disagree, obviously, but they're not fighting in Russia.

    hahaha

    Yeah, this isn't really new.

In fact, since their candidate was elected, why would they even need a spy ship around here?
