My paycheck on Jan 4th was 2% less, but Obama said that the "deal" didn't raise taxes on the middle class, so I'm just imagining things.

Technically speaking, he's not wrong. The rate wasn't raised.

The 2% deduction holiday Obama signed in 2009 had an expiration date on it. This was always going to happen. The rates returned to normal. People who didn't expect it weren't paying attention.

Raising the tax rate isn't the same as a temporary cut expiring on schedule, though they have the same effect. I don't really expect most people to understand the difference.
