I just finished building a new brass tumbler for my .223 and 40 cal and bought corncob from a local pet store. Ran about 150 .223 cases through and it didn't do too bad. Not as shiny as I expected, but clean. The big problem I had was the corncob was stuck inside every .223 case and it took me over 3 hours using a spring hook to clean the brass of the corncob. I thought a lot of people use petstore corncob so I tried. The problem is the grains are too big or too small. What do you reloaders use. I might switch to walnut shells thinking that the shell will be smaller and not jam in the cases. The corncob will be perfect for 40 but not .223. Any help will be appreciated.

I use walnut shells with good results. The grains are small enough that they dont get stuck inside the cases. Got a big box pretty inexpensively from Harbor Freight. Another tip is to not deprime your brass until after you've tumbled it so it doesn't get stuck in the primer hole.

I've always spend the extra couple bucks for media from dillon. Never any of these issues. worst case is a grain stuck in the flash hole which the decap stem pushes right out. To me, a couple extra bucks is worth zero frustration, especially since it ammortizes over thousands of rounds...

Did I not state there was NO ISSUES with 20/40 grit corn cob, this is as never any issues, zero frustration. Its also a whole lot cheaper, more bucks for other things, but it is your cash.

Ya, over a $1.50 a lb. plus shipping.

Remember you're paying for the models.

Well, I took PGRChaplain's advice and got Blue Buffalo walnut shell cat litter from Pet Smart. MUCH better. The 6 pound bag cost about $7 and did a pretty good job. Not a really polished look but clean after 3 hours in the tumbler. I"m using a one gallon paint can and thought maybe some type of paddle system inside would agitate the contents better for a nicer look. Do you use any kind of polish with walnut hulls?

We us a natural cat litter (corn cob) from wally world, its fine ground. Add a cap full of Nu-Finish liquid car polish to whatever media you use, it will shine them right up.

Grainger is about $8 cheaper for the same thing. I used to get it somewhere and shipping was free. Maybe it was Grainger and now they charge, not sure. It works great though.

Drillspot used to have free shipping on this item. Now $35. They dropped shipped it from Grainger.
