DHS should round up everybody. We all have some characteristics in common with some criminal or another.

If it saves one child, it was worth it!

I'm with CTS here...I grew up an Indiana kid, served USMC honorably, married nobly, reared my children.....then homeschooled said children. We all love the history and importance of firearms......and practice frequently. We are self-suficient and prepared. Does that mean I have future mass-murders? Not-so-much, My kids are more likely to take in society's orphans.....and care for the lost dogs of the world.

Yes, I am sure that if the stars aliened properly a few folks I know are capable of mayhem but not anything even close to this.
I think you're underestimating people. I think that if all the right buttons are pushed in the proper order anyone is capable of this.

Some people would just require a lot more button pushing than others. Given all the right circumstances of course.

How do you adjust for the difference between extreme provocation and cases like this in which the killer apparently did it for general principles?

Why all the BS...20 children are dead...6 adults and one mentally ill young man. The guns did not kill those kids the mentally ill man did...he could have just as easily fill a truck full of explosives and drove it into the school...mental health in this country is a joke...the regulations about it as a joke...they advertise on TV the symptoms of a heart attack and other diseases, You try to get help for a mentally ill person and all you hear is we have to wait until he hurts himself or others. Sane people don't kill kids...this man was pained as evil , was he evil or was he insane...or are they one in the same.

:+1: It defies my understanding that so many people cannot see this obvious fact.

I'm not necessarily speaking of provocation.

Job stress, marital issues, money issues, guilt, throw in depression, maybe all combined with a chemical imbalance and any one person could be a recipe for disaster at any given moment.

We all go a little mad sometimes, everyone just responds to the madness differently. I for one, know that as long as I raise my children in the ways of The Lord and try to teach him right from wrong (real right from real wrong) I can be quite certain that he will become a productive member of society. Parents today have no control over their children and I think that's why we've had the shootings as of recent. Plus that kid shouldn't be handling his moms guns anyway without her. The mom should have had them locked up to where he couldn't get at them.

Most likely there will be more information forthcoming that will shed some light on the reasons that caused the tragedy. Mental illness encompasses a lot of emotional problems that can also affect normal people at any given time.
For instance, some years back a CT police officer shot a divorce attorney in the hand and face in a court parking lot who was representing his estranged wife in divorce proceedings. Obviously he was emotionally upset enough to commit a premeditated crime of passion. I believe that this tragedy was a crime that involved an emotional passion too.
He not only killed his mom but disfigured her face in the process.
Who knows what happened with the school system recently or in the past.
Some kids who knew him thought he was a weird, eccentric genius type with issues.
That's not too far off from the recent movie theater massacre and that perpetrator.
And this young guy also wore a Jason hockey mask and black clothes during the shooting.
Whether the emotional issues are real or he's just another copy cat remains to be investigated.
I think that there's societal reasons why this happens as well as the individual's psychological make up.
Why does anybody loose it enough to shoot others?
When I was in high school, distraught Postal employee shooting rampages had become so common that the popular slang term was that someone may be capable of "Going Postal". And it was well known that many Postal employees were war veterans and former military.
There have been a rash of U.S. soldiers murdering foreign civilians in war zones in recent years.
Are those murders any less heinous just because they happened on foreign soil and were committed by soldiers?
Does that somehow make it more excusable because the victims weren't American children?
An ex-FBI profile expert mentioned on the national news how on the same day that this massacre occurred, a man in China went into a Chinese school and slashed 20 or 30 students with a knife. That's actually quite common in China and/or Japan from what I understand.
Massacres happen all over the world, sometimes on a grand scale to the point of genocide.
When put into perspective, I'm sure that the anti's will try to make a mountain out of a molehill.
And I mean that seriously without any disrespect to any of the victims. This is not about guns being in the hands of the wrong people. This is about guns not being the hands of the right people. How come the Israeli's know how to defend themselves, while too many average Americans can't?
Gun rights come first and I'm sorry to say that the tears come 2nd.
I truely believe that those dead kids, educators & "the dead mom" would have wanted it that way. They died for our country's principles and for our beliefs and freedom, and we need to aim to do everything possible to continue that being true.
Guns don't kill people, guns protect & save people from being killed.

Woa, look at this comment! The libs think they've finally found their "Tea Party", Republican, racist, homophobe in the mother of the shooter because she may have been a prepper, good God help us. I flagged this as abuse...gotta love libtards who follow nbcnews.

Lanza's mother was a survivalist convinced Obama, the "Kenyan Muslim Socialist Traitor" that he was, would collapse American society and she'd need to be heavily armed. All this rightwing fear, rage, and fantasy is driving people mad.

I keep saying Hateradio and the lies of Faux are terrorism for the mind, and it's coming true.

Survivalists secretly hope to be king dog after civilization collapses so they can shoot their neighbors. Ugly, ugly people with shrunken souls.

No one could have predicted this horrific event. Based on the limited history of the killer, he was suffering from illnesses that are NOT uncommon. Mom was a prepper and "gun nut", no idea what the killer's involvement in that. However, we have a few on here with the same interests that are totally bat **** crazy. Now it's unlikely that they are going to do something like this but I bet no one that knew the killer and his family would have thought he was capable of this either. One of these days we will see something tragic where the suspect was a poster here.

Lovely. I can see where this is going. Everyone who isn't a happy little sheep without a care in the universe is about to get painted as an instant massacre just add water.

I'm thinking with the idiots that have been on Doomsday Preppers, the general public is already thinking that preppers are a bit off kilter. One of the latest episodes had someone talking about how he'd eat people. Some talking about they'd take what they need.

Do I think that all preppers are nuts? Nope, but there are some that are pretty visible in online communities. There are also a handful of gun owners that seem a bit unbalanced on just about every firearms related board I've ever been a part of.

Men with evil intentions come from all backgrounds and ways of life.

Some backgrounds just tend to be easier to exploit for rating when a tragedy occurs.

The root cause of this tragedy had nothing to do with being home schooled, his mother being a prepper, or the existence of firearms... he was an unstable, bitter man with evil intentions - and that directly led to this horrific event.
