I couldn't decide where to post this so please move if necessary.

I am taking a trip to the Detroit area next month and was wondering if anybody can tell me if their are restrictions on carrying concealed in Detroit? I have an Indiana permit so I know Michigan state is okay but I have no idea about the rules in the Detroit metro area.

    Thanks

I would open carry an AR, maybe some flashbangs, a couple anti-personnel and a cop or too...

Detroit is fine as long as you are gone before the sunsets a high school buddy of mine lives up there and it is not bad. I CC while there and never had an issue.

I heard that if you carry in detroit and are not a felon you are automatically deputized.

When I go up there to visit the siblings I almost open carry. G19 or 17 with blackhawk and only a T-shirt covering it. Quick draw, the old neighborhood isn't what it used to be. It's just plain dangerous now. It'd be so much easier if they would listen to me and LEAVE! :dunno:

I don't intend on going to the bars or anything but I will be in the Allen Park area mostly so I wondered about the Detroit metro area. I appreciate the couple of helpful posts.

I'm usually the 'take it as it comes' kind of guy, but these CC laws suck! "Your Honor, I thought there would be less than 2,500 people at the Kid Rock concert!" Yeah, that would work.

    State of Michigan Pistol-Free Zones
    1. Bars
The Michigan statute very clumsily defines a bar as a place where the primary source of income of the business is the sale of alcoholic liquor by the glass and consumed on the premises.
Obviously, patrons of a particular venue, that serves alcoholic beverages, would not know how much of that business' revenue is generated by the sale of liquor by the glass. However, the general rule is that a CPL holder can carry in a "real" restaurant that also serves alcohol but not in a bar that also serves food.
As an illustration, it is generally considered OK to carry in places like in the following list: Chili's, Fridays, Ruby Tuesday, and the Olive Garden.
    2. Large Entertainment Facilities
The statute, once again clumsily tries to define a Pistol-Free Zone. In this case, a facility with a seating capacity of 2,500 or more individuals that the individual knows or should know has a seating capacity of 2,500 or more.
Confusion can be an issue with a CPL holder as to whether "he should know" how many seats are in a particular entertainment venue. In large venues like the Fox Theatre or the Music Hall, most people "could reasonably" know that there are at least 2,500 seats in the building.
In other cases, a sign above the entrances stating the exact seating capacity could also provide definitive info. However, what about smaller venues that don't have a sign posted? What about movie theatres? Is it the total number of seats in the entire complex or just in theatre where you are going to watch a movie? The statute is not clear.
    3. Religious Facilities
The statute defines this Pistol-Free Zone as any property or facility owned or operated by a church, synagogue, mosque, temple, or other place of worship. One source of confusion that could exist with this provision is that it is not totally clear if it includes businesses such as church-owned apartment buildings, car washes, and retail shops.
Also, note that it is okay to carry a concealed pistol on church property if you have permission from the presiding official of the respective religious institution. I recommend that you get permission in writing and keep the note in your purse or wallet.
    4. Hospitals
Everyone knows what a hospital looks like and should not have any problems with unknowingly carrying a handgun into a Pistol-Free Zone here. How about a doctor's office or a local clinic? It's open to interpretation. What do you think?
    5. Casinos
I think that everyone can agree as to what constitutes a casino. We have several in the area: MotorCity, Greektown, and the MGM.
    6. University Dormitories and Classrooms
The statute does not mention any other areas on campus as Pistol-Free Zones. Thus, one can assume that the campus grounds are "fair game." Also, keep in mind that a university's policies, as to whether students can carry at school, do not affect non-students.
    7. Sports Arenas and Stadiums
We have several stadiums and arenas in the local area: Joe Louis Arena, Cobo Hall, Ford Field, The Palace of Auburn Hills, and etc.
    8. Child-Care Facilities
The statute defines this Pistol-Free Zone as a public or private child care center or day care center, public or private child caring institution, or public or private child placing agency.
    9. Schools and School Property
The statute expressly allows parents and legal guardians of students at a specific school to be armed while dropping off and picking up their kids, as long as the parent of legal guardian does not exit his vehicle.
    A Couple Observations
One point to keep in mind with all of the above statutorily defined Pistol-Free Zones is that the parking lots of those facilities are exempt. Thus, if you are carrying a pistol while driving to a Pistol-Free Zone, it is perfectly legal to leave your handgun in your car. Preferably, you will have already bought a car-safe just for that express purpose.
Another point to ponder is the fact that there are some gray areas in the law. If you are in doubt as to whether you are in a Pistol-Free Zone, you may want to err on the side of caution and leave your handgun in your car.

Born and raised in Detroit (Last white male born in Wayne County) Michigan, lifelong Wolverine, now living in a free state. Since I travel home a few times each year, I always carry due to reciprical agreemnent. However, as stated earlier, you HAVE to follow Michigan Law, however goofy, they are the best they (Michiganders) can get. So rule #1. CC Carry is just that Concealed and nobody but YOU knows about it.
Rule #2. Be aware of and follow Michigan law. Rule#3, should be #1. Go into Detroit only after daylight, with a full tank of gas and backup in case you have car trouble. Leave at dusk. You will see things you never seen before a mile from Ford Field, you think its urban blight, war torn Boznia, but it ain't. There are people in those houses, burnt, boarded, al burglarized by the BOOGYMEN/WOMEN.

Allen Park/Hazle Park it ain't South Park...............Place gives me the heeby jeebies, and I am from there. Read the newspapers freep.com | Detroit Free Press | Detroit news, community, entertainment, yellow pages and classifieds. Serving Detroit, MI, that should serve as a warning the natives are certifiably CRAZY. Get a "I'm so bad I vacationed in Detroit" T-shirt. My brother is a Sgt at the Hazle Park PD.............he always carries anytime, anywhere, cause he can, and I stay pretty close to him when we do go downtown wishing I had a long gun in my hands. Recently my daughters boyfriend took a trip up with us and one morning my Dad and I took him out for a tour............boy's as Hoosier as it gets, and he was shocked. I told him I would give him $100 casino cash just to walk down a section of Woodward Ave, Fort Street, or Trumble Ave by the old stadium in broad daylight and he refused. Why?!? He didnt have a gun or permit. Well he does now a new Springfield XDM 9mm and a pink card LTCH.
I watched the city burn in the summer of 67. Funny thing, those were the good ol days. Take a course in Arabic too before ya go, or Yooper, so you can converse with an arab or canadien both found there out of thgeir element. Better yet, stay home!

Just store your wallet in the safe. Seriously. "Let's go back to my trunk, that's where I keep my wallet. It's in a small safe for valuables. Here, let me reach down and open it." Then, grab gun. Yep, that should work flawlessly.

I was born in Battle Creek. I was so glad when we moved. I was in Detroit Michigan last fall for a few days. Man is that place depressing now a days or what? I have seen better looking 3rd world combat zones than large parts of that city.

I wanted to bring this thread back as I will be going this weekend and it seems that CC is a must but I need a bazooka. I'm not actually going into Detroit(hopefully) but will be in Allen Park and surrounding areas. Appreciate all the responses.

I was downtown Detroit less than a year ago. I carried my handgun. I did not feel threatened in any way. Its not like people are running the streets shooting each other. Of course this was during the day....

I took my Kimber with me for a week long sales training session in Detroit. I only had one problem, that was when I decided to take the bridge across to Canada on a whim. Long story short, I got searched on the Canada side. They zip tied my gun and sent me back. They were very nice and told me because I told them about the gun, I hadn't commited any crime. They warned me that the U.S. border guards wouldn't be happy though, and they were right. 10 border guards came to my truck on the other side with guns drawn and cuffed me. I was question for 3 hours by some overpaid under educated guy that learned his interogation skills from a bad 80's cop movie. Turns out I broke no laws and they finally let me go. The thing that really sticks out to me though was when inquisitor asked me why I would bring a gun to Detroit? Really? That seemed pretty stupid to me.
