Don't they have to register their guns up there? That would certainly make getting an accurate confiscation exercise as productive as possible.

Summary: Well Ol' Joe Smith had a license to carry at the time of his death. We don't want a criminal to potentially break into his empty house and steal his carry gun. But since we don't know which of these 20 pistols he carried, we'd better take them all. And of course we'll grab the rifles for good measure.

I don't see how this could possibly be legal, but then again, I'm not familiar with all of the ridiculous gun laws in place in NY.

IANAL but this is very wrong. By this logic, kitchen knives should also be confiscated "because they can get into the wrong hands". NY is a peoples socialist republik. Glad my ancestors bailed from there when they did. Interesting to see if any 2A advocate groups will take this to court.

I'm sure somebody will in time, but for now it would really suck to be a gun owner in NY.

All handguns are registered in NY, and included on their permit.
IIRC they can be willed or handed down to family members, but those members must then apply for a permit and register the handguns.

Sounds like one solution is to gift your collection to your relatives as you age in NY.

Yeah. But some people don't realize this can be done, As the article suggests. Sort of tricking people into handing them over, not realizing they have the option to keep them (or even sell them to an ffl)
There is one (unrelated to the article) caveat in all of this. The new SAFE act allows longuns (which meet their 'assault weapon criteria') to continue to be owned, so long as they are registered. However, those particular firearms cannot be willed or gifted. They can only be sold to ffl's or handed over to LEO. Many such firearms were not 'illegal' until the recent passing of the SAFE act.

    .
It's a place where the only thing greater than the corruption is the lack of accountability. A true leadership state.
