China has had a simmering domestic terrorism issue for a long time with the Uighurs.

Why is there tension between China and the Uighurs? - BBC News

In June 2012, six Uighurs reportedly tried to hijack a plane from Hotan to Urumqi before they were overpowered by passengers and crew.
There was bloodshed in April 2013 and in June that year, 27 people died in Shanshan county after police opened fire on what state media described as a mob armed with knives attacking local government buildings.
    ...

At least 31 people were killed and more than 90 suffered injuries in May 2014 when two cars crashed through an Urumqi market and explosives were tossed into the crowd. China called it a "violent terrorist incident".
It followed a bomb and knife attack at Urumqi's south railway station in April, which killed three and injured 79 others.
In July, authorities said a knife-wielding gang attacked a police station and government offices in Yarkant, leaving 96 dead. The imam of China's largest mosque, Jume Tahir, was stabbed to death days later.

It would only take one, or a few, who were familiar with China's chemical storage infrastructure (or lack thereof) to really create havoc.

The Uighurs are on the opposite side of China in central Asia. It is possible they are involved, but I wouldn't put them at the top of the list.

Curious who is at the top of your list. :)

Bangkok bomb: Second foreign suspect arrested - BBC News
At a press conference, Thailand's national police spokesman Lt Gen Prawut Thavornsiri confirmed that police were "confident that he is the key suspect" and was believed to have been involved in the network that staged the attacks.
He said the man was intercepted as he attempted to cross the border illegally into Cambodia, and was currently being held without charge. He added that the man spoke to officers in English.
The passport purportedly carried by the man shows his place of birth as the Chinese province of Xinjiang, which has a significant Muslim Uighur population and where Beijing has repressed popular resistance to its rule.
Thailand controversially repatriated more than 100 Uighur Muslims to China in July.

    They may be spreading out....

China explosions: What we know about what happened in Tianjin - BBC News
Before the explosions, several firefighters were already at the scene trying to control a blaze. There have been suggestions that water sprayed on some of the chemicals could have led to the blasts.

Calcium carbide, known to be at the site, reacts with water to create the highly explosive acetylene.
Chemical experts suggest an acetylene blast could then have detonated the other chemicals for a much larger blast.
    ...

They took place at a warehouse at the port which contained hazardous and flammable chemicals, including calcium carbide, sodium cyanide, potassium nitrate, ammonium nitrate and sodium nitrate.
    ...

initial explosion, in a city with a population of around 15 million, had a power equivalent to three tonnes of TNT detonating, while the second was the equivalent of 21 tonnes.
The second was so big that satellites orbiting Earth picked it up as well.

This is what a tiny bit does. At the port, there was a LOT more.

It is not known what chemicals were being stored at the site.[SUP][18][/SUP] In addition to vast quantities of sodium cyanide and calcium carbide, paperwork was discovered showing that 800 tonnes of ammonium nitrate and 500 tonnes of potassium nitrate were at the blast site.[SUP][21][/SUP] On 17 August, the deputy director of the public security bureau's fire department told CCTV:
Over 40 kinds of hazardous chemicals [were stored on site]. As far as we know, there were ammonium nitrate and potassium nitrate. According to what we know so far, all together there should have been around 3,000 tonnes.[SUP][56][/SUP]
Ammonium nitrate, which is principally used in manufacturing fertilizer, has been implicated in a number of other fatal industrial explosions. A fire department spokesman confirmed that firefighters had used water in combating the initial fire, which may have led to water being sprayed on calcium carbide, releasing the highly volatile gas acetylene. This may have detonated the ammonium nitrate.[SUP][[/SUP]
