I don't know about best, but I picked up a Taurus PT 22 this morning. I haven't shot it yet but the new "poly grips" feel fantastic in my big hands. My finger doesn't even dangle off it like it would with some pocket guns.
I think I am going to love it!

Just picked up an SR22...last week and 600 rds of just about every kind of ammo manufacturer and load except for subs...never had a malfunction. I'm down to just shooting CCI Stingers and Velocitors now. It's just one fun lil pistol to shoot

+1 for the 22/45, I especially like the threaded barrel. That being said, my #1 is my Sig 1911-22. Full size, threaded barrel, and makes a great trainer for 1911 shooters with the controls.

    re tracker

I have a Taurus Tracker. 12 shot 22 revolver. great for plinking but it's not a clip fed auto like you are looking for. I had a nice little 22 plinker but i forget what it was. came with two barrels, 3" and 5"

    is the tracker for sale?

I have always liked the Ruger Mark II, but make sure you use clean/good ammo or you will be jamming in a short time.

Since I'm a noob with this segment of the market, does the 22/45 share the same assembly challenges as the Mark series?

I want a good .22 pistol but not the hassle of the reassembling a Mark pistol.

Those assembly challenges can easily be overcome with this kit. Plus, you get an incredible 3.5 lb trigger pull.

No .22 semi auto is as well built as a Ruger MK series. None. I bought mine in 1981....I have well north of 50,000 rounds through it...and it shoots as well today as it did in 1981. In other words, you can drive tacks with it.

Thanks for that pointer, jgreiner. If I lived closer to you, I'd buy you Chik-fil-a! (our reason for stopping in W Lafayette every time we pass through).

No problem. I just wish I had known about the Speed Strip kit years ago. Lot's of busted knuckles and swearing trying to re-assemble that thing.

I have a good friend that jsut bought a new Ruger Mark lll target from Bradis about a month or so ago. He is having the kit installed. $15 at a local gunshop for the install. :)

I'd say it depends on why you want it. Want to target shoot at 25 yards on the cheap? Buy a 22/45. Want cheaper training for your centerfire gun? Buy something that more represents the grip and/or size like an SR22 or GSG 1911.

My favorite .22 plinker is my RIA XT22. I have had many different brands in my past but the 1911 style is what fits me best.
I like the fact is is all steel and has been flawless. Now if I could only shoot as good as it can.

Anything from Ruger is the way to go. I have a MKIII Hunter and several 10/22 rifles. I dig that new 22/45 Lite since I am now into 1911's. Ruger and you wont go wrong with whatever model you choose.

I just ordered a 22/45 lite. Haven't picked it up yet. That speed strip kit looks like a good idea, I may have to order one also.
