With the way the law works, why would anyone want to be a cop?

In specific detail, if you consider 10 different officers, you will likely find 11 different answers, but I feel that a generalization that there are two basic reasons why a person would do so. There are some who are motivated to make their community a better place by protecting their neighbors from predatory criminals, and there are others who are there to enjoy and/or abuse the trappings of the job for self-gratification. It seems to me to be a magnet for both the best and the worst among us. The best will tolerate the crap they catch for the sake of accomplishing the good they are there to accomplish. The worst will remain there in order to get away with things they would never get away with as non-police. I have also noticed that good departments will weed out bad officers, and bad departments will weed out good officers.
