    Simple test.
    Get and become familiar with a simple AC/DC multi meter.
    Check cold battery voltage. Should be 12 plus volts. If under 12 volts the battery could be failing or with a high mileage car there could be a drain on it.
    Start car. Check Voltage at idle to the battery. It should exceed 13 Volts DC and could be as much as 14 Volts.
    Start turning on accessory's. Heater fan to high. Volts should hold steady.
    Lights on....same thing.
    If Voltage drops below 13 have the charging circuit looked at by a competent mechanic.

    I've found that if the diagnosis starts with "As a courtesy check", it's best to grab and hang onto your wallet tightly until you've confirmed with those who don't have a financial interest in your wallet.
