Have you ever been within 20 feet of a cap when it goes off in the open. Molten bits of casing is blown in every direction and you better have eye protection. With 20 caps, 150 grains or so of lead azide or PETN can ruin your whole day. He also said there was powder, if you've ever seen a 1 lb. charge of uncontained black powder fired you'd have more respect for the potential.

I've been within 4 feet of a cap & two feet of det-cord going off. While i was behind a breaching blanket it was still MSD and the biggest worry i had was about blast overpressure, not shrapnel. While, in this context, with a doughnut charge you may get hit with wood fragments or a stray door handle, that stuff tends to go into the room instead of back towards you.

Trust me, you don't crimp blasting caps without learning a healthy amount of respect for them. Every time i think "Will this be the time?", but i still have all my pieces and parts. But like i said, a healthy respect for them, not fear.
