When the hell are the morons currently running our military going to come to the realization that the purpose of a military is to kill people and break things, not conform itself to being just another jobs program so that the social justice warriors can check off a box?

Maybe sometime after we get a Commander in Chief that has served....it won't be 2016, none of the candidates have any military experience....like our current CIC. Politics have been ruling the military might of the United States for over a century...probably never going to change.

Here I thought the purpose of a military was to protect us.

I was going to say the same thing, but Old Pink probably is tired of me challenging his posts.

How do you do one without the superior means and willingness to do the other? Without vastly superior killing and destroying power, wars linger and become a constant part of our lives. Personally, I'd rather have a crew of focused and equipped folks ready and willing to do the terrible job that needs to be done than a socialogy experiment.

I'd be curious to know the numbers...

Hmm in a nation of 350 million people, how much would it cost to have mandatory military service?

That's giving free jobs to everyone between 18 and, I think 26, for 2 years, and providing their training, equipment, and living expenses. As well as caring for them for life after the fact.

...Unless a far smarter man than myself can tell me how socialism is impossible, but employing everyone 18-26 and providing them with lifetime benefits is somehow different.

"You must spread some reputation around before giving it to Tombs again" :yesway:.

It really does seem true: there's nobody who really believes in small government; just different flavors of what they want it to be Big for. (But don't tell that to the militant authoritarians; to borrow a line from Forrest Gump, we wouldn't want to disturb their Black Panther Party).

What exactly would the military look like after such a juggernaut? My guess is, rather than improving the character of the citizenry, it would probably just end up destroying the character of the military.

And don't discount the tendency for rulers to become even more power-hungry, with such a gigantic toy sitting in front of them. With such a large standing force, it would be all but impossible for them to resist using it on something. Republican Presidents (to the extent we'd ever have them again) would send it abroad to assist the American East India Company in spreading its oligarchical footprint. And Democrat Presidents would put those boots to work building Trains to Nowhere in the California desert.

Do it, at least if you can in an intelligent, rational manner.
As for the false dichotomy introduced by the gormless one, I'll just leave these here:
“War is the remedy that our enemies have chosen, and I say let us give them
    all they want.”
    William T. Sherman

“You might as well appeal against a thunderstorm as against these terrible hardships of war. War is cruelty, there is no use trying to reform it; the crueler it is, the sooner it will be over.”
    William T. Sherman

“There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory, but, boys, it is all hell.”

Has a lot to do with the Moron-in-Chief and his Community Organizing Corps.

    Correct
Just purge all the true warrior flag officers and replace them with politicians disguised as flag officers, then roll out the agenda at light speed.

You keep a force just like you described but you don't go looking for excuses to use it. Why I like the militia model, their purpose isn't to go out and find people to kill it's to protect your home land in the event you come under threat.

"WAR is a racket. It always has been.It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives."
