    Dave,

great pic of Kevin Angstadt, did you see he finished 3rd overall this year!!!!

Yeah. He's done quite well there the past few years. And, what is it with those guys throwing 8's on the mover? WTF?

Actually, that pic of Karl Piper is one of my all time favorites. I like the colors in that photo a lot for some reason.

So does anyone do strobist work? Lighting and pocket wizards type stuff?

Man, I'd love to get into strobist work. I've been researching lighting setups for a while now.

Currently, I only cover concerts around Indy. Here's some from the current concert season:

    Designer99 and jjlaughner,

How did you guys get into photography professionally? My girlfriend graduated from Herron a year ago with a BFA in photography and she'd love to take band photos like that. Any info/advice you have would be great.

For me the Band stuff was never a money maker unless the promo company or event people paid (local bands can't pay much and touring bands usually have an inside person).

I started shooting cars and landscapes in HS. The money maker was my wedding photos. If you can stand doing it, wedding and senior photos seem to be the profitable areas. After College I had some point and shoots for ebay stuff, but it wasn't until a few years ago I picked up a Canon XTi and got into modeling and event photos. Now I'm using a 5D.

As far as bend photos, get a camera that has great high ISO images and a FAST lens. My band setup is a 5D, 50mm/1.4 lens, ISO 640-800, 1/30-1/125sec (usually 1/60 sec at F1.4-2.0).

Cool band photos, how did you get into those shows with a DSLR?

As far as strobist stuff, there are several groups in Indy that get together and play. There is also a photographers Gathering downtown Indy I go to. Sometimes we bring a bunch of speedlites and play around, otherwise we just hang out and talk. I started out with the eBay triggers and eventually picked up the Pocket Wizards Plus II's and I use a combination of studio lights and speedlites (580exII's and 540ez with various triggers).

What kind of setup are you running on the camera side?

I get photo passes for concerts. I've been covering concerts for magazines
& websites for about 7yrs now. It doesn't really pay well, sort of a side gig / hobby. It's a lot of fun up there in the pit. I've probably covered over 200 shows now.

Right now I'm using two Canon 30D's, one with a 70-200 2.8 and one with a 16-35 2.8 It's a good setup for now, but I'm drooling over that Canon 7D.

As far as strobist work, I'm sure I'll go down the same path as you... start with ebay triggers then move to Pocket Wizards or Radio Poppers.

The strobist group sounds fun. A friend of mine that shoots for the Indy Star is in one of those groups. Let me know when your next meeting is!

One question: A guy at Roberts told me that the 540EZ would not work with the 30D. Is that true?

Network your A$$ off. It doesn't matter how great of a photographer you are if nobody knows about you. The most important part is establishing relationships within an area that you want to specialize in.

As far as concert photography, start shooting bands at smaller venues where they allow photos. Build up a portfolio of those shots to move to the next level.

Send me a link to her portfolio, I might be able to set her up with some small gigs.

:laugh::laugh::laugh: I'm sorry, you guys would get a laugh out of what I just saw. I won't copy/paste it because it's too much trouble but one of the pictures above showed an old wood building out in a field and the way it loaded, this came out as the title (Here's an image you all should enjoy. It's the IRS HQ in DC.) I don't think so,:laugh::laugh::laugh:

I used a Kodak digital camera in CA a few years ago...this is the Boole Tree, one of the biggest Giant Sequia's...its over 300 ft. tall, weighs more than 20 blue whales, an it took about 45 big steps to walk around it, thats my friend Lorrie.

Heres another but smaller Giant Sequia with my friend to the left...these tree's are amazing!

I shoot with a team of people that covers all the races at IMS for the Indy Star. I use Canon digital bodies and the L-series lenses and since media outlets demanded that photogs switch to digital, I have a closet full of 35mm bodies which are now REALLY expensive paperweights...

Here is a sample of my stuff that is easy to get to:
The Indianapolis Star | 2010 Indy 500 crashes

I shot weddings for awhile, but if you have ever heard the "Bridezilla" they are nothing compared "Mothers of the Bridezilla"...no matter how much I made it wasn't worth it.

Race cars are more fun and I haven't paid to see a race since the 90's...it's a good gig. :)

Wow, old thread that is coming back to life.

This is probably my best shot to date. Used a 50mm 1.8 wide open to get limited depth of field and focus on the contrast of the new born's feet and the father's hands.

This used to be my best seller of my meager portfolio on iStockPhoto.
