Be interesting to see if the chinese will do any better running the place, and what the US departure will do to the balance between India and Pakistan.

The Chicoms will recognize the taliban as the official Afghan authority and they will cut deals with them to further their interests instead of trying to change the dynamics by force.

    NY Times:

U.S. Asks Taliban to Spare Its Embassy in Coming Fight for Kabul

The demand seeks to stave off an evacuation of the embassy by dangling aid to future Afghan governments — even one that includes the Taliban.

WASHINGTON — American negotiators are trying to extract assurances from the Taliban that they will not attack the U.S. Embassy in Kabul if the extremist group overruns the capital in a direct challenge to the country’s government, two American officials said.

The effort, led by Zalmay Khalilzad, the chief American envoy in talks with the Taliban, seeks to stave off an evacuation of the embassy as the fighters rapidly seize cities across Afghanistan.
    ....
Mr. Khalilzad is hoping to convince Taliban leaders that the embassy must remain open, and secure, if the group hopes to receive American financial aid and other assistance as part of a future Afghan government.

Before it gets memory holed because I already see the narrative changing.

the taliban had a ban on growing opium from at least 1994-2000. We went in and despite our “strong” anti drug stance Afghanistan is the supplier of 90 some % of the worlds heroin.

let that sink in for a second. The country we have been occupying militarily for 20 years has somehow supplied the world with narcotics the whole time.

now I see news stories saying how the taliban is behind all the drug trade. It’s total BS. Hardcore Muslims don’t mess with drugs.

One local Muslim business owning family sold off all of their liquor serving establishments because someone in the family got sick and they said it was God’s punishment for serving alcohol.

Guys, our executive branch is very interested in the flows of energy and their policies and the actions of our military and proxies* will be at least in part determined by the Caspian agreements now taking place between the nations that border the sea. Due to the recent agreements Turkmenistan will now be able to market gas to Europe by pipeline. So just like a month before 9/11 when the Taliban refused to give the US the pipeline route it wanted, this is going to readjust the dynamics in the region.

Was unaware of this whole dynamic. Appears that now that they don’t need a pipeline through Afghanistan as of 2020 that the withdrawal got sped way up.

    very interesting

How many things can the current administration screw up? They must hold a record. The American people chose personality over competence. We and Afghans are paying the price. My heart goes out to the vets of this war, especially to those who were seriously wounded and the families of those slain.
How much? Everything. They can screw up everything. Biden seems to have a knack for picking the most wrong policy any given subject. It’s uncanny. If someone had no idea at all how to decide on policies, Joe could be an outstanding advisor. Just do the opposite from what he advises and it’s likely to be a winner.

I don't know. The Russians didn't fare any better than we did there, and they were a lot more ruthless.
An invading force is a bit different. I’m thinking more about something like China. They’ll kill their own people and harvest their organs. If Chinese people were armed, and they tried to fight their own government, I see no reason why they wouldn’t use WMD on them and think nothing of it.

But that takes political capital. And excellent agitprop. China has both.
