Any estimates on the range of the shooting, taking into account elevation, from the shooter's position to the festival? I haven't seen anything clear on it, but I've gotta guess at least a few hundred yards - maybe further?

    ETA:
Google maps, 2D point to point, estimates ~420 meters from the Mandalay Bay to that festival area.

If I'm not mistaken, that's also where the film the Ninja Warrior events.

FEC doesn't appear to have any federal campaign donations from shooter or his female companion.

I don't see a political motivation behind killing innocents at a concert. Do Jason Aldean fans represent some type of "enemy" to anyone?

...maybe a far-leftist with an agenda? Other fluffing his ego, what purpose does an act like this serve? Unless he's hoping to turn public sentiment against guns and gun owners, I don't see much political value in his actions.

One thing's for sure, there will be voices from all over the political spectrum calling for "additional measures" against "the American Gun Problem". I guess we'll see just how much the political landscape has changed in the last few months: if a gun-grabber bill is put in front of our president how will he react? He doesn't seem to have much in the way of core principles beyond protecting his fragile ego...will he stand for what's right, or take the "win" that comes with siding with statists?

In addition to being a dark day for the American people and the American Experiment, going forward this could mark a turning point against American-style individual liberty.

The whole thing is too much to take in at once.

If you peruse reddit, it's already confirmed that these were paid crisis actors.

Investigation over. We can close the thread now, knowing that there are deep thinkers out there that have it all figured out.

Well, I'm just looking for data points right now. :) Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but this choice of concert to hit (if it was a choice) could have meaning.

Honestly, I think Newtown was "worse" in a collective emotion way. But, that's not to minimize this event, just to share my personal view of it.

    Yeah, saw part of that.

I wonder how much of that is just people doing a market-check on gullibility. I'm sure some of them are just trying to see how many crazy things they can say that some people will claim to believe.

From 270m (the corner of the street) to 420m (middle of the lot).Or up to 500m if you take the farthest part of the lot.

So... at least one "chapter" of ANTIFA is "claiming responsibility" or at least expressing sympathy to their "comrade"? Interesting, if true.

Just like the 2015 Bataclan shooting in Paris.
The fact that a US band was playing that night was not just a coincidence IMO and could have been viewed as a "bonus" by those terrorists.

Glad the LEO were able to get to his room as quick as they were. That is one large casino/hotel/building to navigate.

In terms of "claiming responsibility" I don't think anyone will be offended if I liken Antifa to Daesh - they both would take responsibility for rain and sunshine if they thought it would help their marketing.

I'm not sure if hotel security are armed in Vegas (they probably are if there's also a casino). They might have been the first ones to get there.

This is just unbelievable, such a horrible act, the amount of injured and dead, I'm speechless right now.

Going to be in Vegas at the end of the month too....

There's just no good way to defend yourself in that situation.

Up to 500m? Well, my handgun is useless. If I tried to return fire I'd probably hit a random innocent myself, I certainly can't make a pistol round count reliably beyond a few meters. Even if a trained rifleman were present and nominally equipped...500m with a patrol rifle? Man, that takes skill, training, and a steady nerve. One or two degrees off at 500m could send a round into a different hotel room.

Find cover if you can, I guess...running seems futile. I can only imagine the stampede. Is running over open ground is any better an option than standing still with hundreds of rounds raining down on your position?

What if you were in the next room when the shooting started...is there anything you could do beyond report your info to the authorities? I don't think I could knock a hotel door down to get access to the shooter (assuming I had the balls to even try)...empty a magazine blind through the door? I guess it's possible that action might save lives...maybe.

This is terrorism. I don't care what the ideology of the shooter was. The net effect is to create unnecessary fear among good people. How do we protect ourselves from this?
