I've jumped twice from 2800 ft., & what a thrill. There is nothing to worry about, cause you have a backup shoot that you manually deploy.

... and, if there is a problem with the reserve, you have the rest of your life to fix it.

Skydivers: good to the last drop.

Some outfits use some barometric unit that will deploy the backup chute automatically (In case you get knocked out or something during freefall and cannot manually deploy the backup)...

Nowadays, all students or tandem students (I call them tandem riders) will jump gear that has an Automatic Activation Device (AAD) that senses barometric pressure and freefall speed. If the students are still in freefall when they reach the AADs set altitude, the AAD cuts the closing loop to the reserve parachute to allow it to deploy.

Of coarse, AADs, being mechanical devices, are prone to failure. So, it is best to deploy yourself.

Only a few of us experienced skydivers jump gear that doesn't have an AAD.

    Comments.

    - Girls. Holy smokes. Everywhere I looked there were gorgeous women. Wa-wa-wee-wah.

    - We dove from 13,000 ft. Pulled the cord at 5,500 ft.

    - Free fall lasts for about 60 seconds, then you pull the chute and drift for several minutes.

    - Staring out the edge of the plane is the most incredible thing. No time to think about it though. Countdown, and jump.

    - Its hard to breathe up there at first. But its hard to discern the lack of oxygen from the amazing adrenaline rush. Have to take short breaths.

    - Your body slows from 120 mph to almost nothing in just a brief moment as the chute deploys. All the pressure lands on your crotch, where your leg straps loop around. It is painful. The rest of the descent feels like that.

    - The landing is pretty cool. You come in so fast, and pull up at the last second and slow down.

    - Instructors jump maybe 12 times a day.

    - The equilibrium thing varies for different people. Some don't feel any pain or hearing disruption. Mine was pretty severe. I stumbled for quite a bit after the landing.

    - the whole thing is a blur. It goes by very quickly.

    - Retention holsters only. LOL

Congrats. Did it myself, wish I had more money/time to do it again.

Try sudafed for the ears before you go next.

Money wise, once you become a licensed skydiver, you only pay for the airplane ride (varies $20 - $25). Become an instructor, the student pays for the ride. Become a tandem instructor, you get paid.

A day of skydiving eventually gets to be like a day of golfing, except more golfers die on the golf coarse each year.

    ??????

Where's hornady to complain about the government requiring licensing for jumping out of an airplane.

Glad you made it back safely. It's definitely on my bucket list, although my wife rains on my parade every time I mention it now that we have a little one at home.
