Currently I have an XD45 for my nightstand gun, but with price and availability of ammo am thinking of getting a .40 instead.

Looking for opinions on medium to full size .40 cal pistols with equal or greater capacity (XD45 has 13+1). Here is the kicker though, the woman of the house wants to have a manual safety, she is fine with guns and I have taken her shooting, but a manual safety just makes her feel warm and fuzzy I guess. So, what are my choices?

    Thanks,
    -Nick

Price range similar to the XD, around $500 would be nice. Anyone have thoughts on the Taurus 840? And yes the misses requires a manual safety :-(

personally, i don't think there is a huge difference in price or availability between .40 and .45.

if you're dead set on a .40 - something like a Beretta PX4 is pretty nice. (Beretta JXF4F21 PX4 STORM 40SW 14RD for Sale at Buds Gun Shop $535.00)

for a bit more $$$ you can get a H&K USP.

What he said, I don't know that you'll notice much difference in $$ or avail. between the .40 and .45 BUT any reason to purchase a new gun is a good enough reason!!!:rockwoot:

+1 on the HK USP also!!

I have had the .45 for less then a year and the cheapest I have found ammo is $19.99/50 at dick's, and have only been in stock twice. They do seem to have .40 more often when I look though and I have seen .40 at Walmart alot more often and it is considerably cheaper there (never found .45 at Walmart).

I do like the S&W, will need to get my hands on one, any thoughts on where to find one around Indy? Wait for next 1500?

    Thanks for the input everyone.

Well my personal bedside gun is the Taurus 24/7 40 15+1 It is full size with a manual safety. It has always been reliable and I have no complaints with it. My wife prefers shooting it over her Sigma 40.

It sits in a liberty gun rug w/4 spare mags. So in about a hot second I have 75 rounds of 40 S&W at my disposal. But as previously stated....all people are not fans of the Taurus brand. I have owned several of them and have not have any issues with their products.:twocents:

I agree with the m&p, I think the Xd with manual safety is only on the .45. The Beretta is another good choice. I would also recommend a CZ, but they are more expensive. Also maybe look at the Taurus 24/7.

Quite a bit of Taurus hate in this thread... I actually own a Taurus 840, and it's a good gun. The safety system is very well designed and the gun is fully ambidextrous. It shouldn't be overlooked because of the Taurus name.

I have to say that I have a 85 Taurus as this choice. I know I dont have to fumble with anything and if the gun does not fire I simply pull trigger again.
