Been thinking about getting another .223 rifle.

I had a AR and didn't care for it much....but the new owner loves it and I got a M1 in trade so it all worked out(traded my brother a few months back before it all went crazy)

That said, I'd like to get another .223 rifle. What are my choices? I had a roomate one time with a Mini-14 which I think fits the bill. Any others to choose from? I'd like magazine fed....bolt action would be OK too but bolt action doesn't equal magazine fed very often(clip fed would be OK too lol)...

In my experiance if you were not happy with the ar you will not like the mini.

You can get a remington 700, or a savage 10 and add a badger bottom metal and a 10 rd AI mag

This is basically what a remington 700 will look like with a badger

I would go for a savage 110 or Remington 700, I would personally stay away from the mossberg line of rifles because they tend to be less accurate then their Remington or savage counterparts.

Maybe a bull barrel would be nice if you are shooting from a bench. Less recoil, and more accuracy is what I'd want. You know, so when you pull the trigger back, and it goes boom, the 9x magnified scope never loses sight if the bulls eye. I want one with a weighted stock too...

Might give the Howa 1500 Varminter a look. Im looking mto get one myself, an they have a detachable box mag kit available for them now as well for very reasonable money.

If you want to use it for hunting, I'd consider a sporter barrel instead of a heavy barrel gun, they are just that...darn heavy. When you are hiking up and down hills or mountains, you will appreciate the lighter weight tapered sporter barrels. If you want a fairly inexpensive but very accurate hunter setup in .223, I just ordered a Savage Model 11 Trophy Hunter Xp with a Nikon 3-9x scope from Buds Guns for $450 shipped to my FFL, that's a $100 cheaper than Dicks Sporting Goods if you can find one in .223. It comes with the same Accutrigger setup as the Model 10's and 12's and has good reviews for being a nice out of the box shooter out to 200+ yds. If you need 300-600yd accuracy you will need a different gun or a more powerful/heavy round, like 308, or 7mm. Good luck, lots of choices out there, let us know what you end up buying.

My walking varmint rig is a .243 700ADL synth with 4-12X AO Leupold. The 12X is nice for punching paper at 100, but for a yote rig, a 3-9X is about right.

At 9X and a chuck, even when shot from Harris bipods, needs to be around 200 yds to stay visible in recoil to spot the shot. 12X? Forget it.

My Varmint Synthetic blued fluted (non catalogued) .22-250 700 with a fixed 12X Leupold moved as much as my 3-9X tactical Leupold scoped ADL .243 (first one).

So with that, the .22-250 went bye bye.

My first .243 ADL after minor tweaks shot .500 for 5 shots @ 100 (handloads) and 4 of those went into .330". 300 yard accuracy was fine. Chucks at 275 off the hood of my Jeep with bipods were boringly easy goners. 350-375 if I guessed it right, wasn't much of a deal. The accuracy was there, I just had to get them to come out on a field I had previously dimensioned. Man, if we only had laser rangefinders back then!

Farthest kill was a yote at 450, through a fence at about 448 or 449 ;)

BS! I had a Mossberg 100ATR that was just as accurate as any base model Savage or Remington.

    A Ruger?

Added : I was suggesting a bolt action Ruger.
I don't keep close tabs on current production bolt action rifles but there seems to be several good options.
The last time I looked at the Ruger lineup there had .223 guns with a couple of different twist options.
